Mzamba Beach

Reviewed By Karen F - Mtunzini, South Africa

Each holiday we look for an educational activity that we can enjoy as a family - with our children now at university and high school, this has become more challenging. What a revelation this outing was for all of us! Having spent many happy days camping as a child on the spot where the Wildcoast Casino now stands, I had wanted to go back and explore the Petrified Forest and the fossils for some time. Having finally convinced the family that it would be fun, we duly set off at low tide one morning to hike the 2.5km South along the beach from the casino. As we approached the first set of rocks with fisherman, we were intercepted by a guard who siad we may not proceed further than the first rocks. When pushed he explained that it wasn't safe and that to see the fossils/forest we should either go with a tour from the hotel or hire a guard. I explained that I had stayed as a child and wanted to show my children and he offered to escort us (explaining that a couple had recently been attacked and the wife raped and the husband murdered) - I guess getting a guard has now become imperative. Not only did this wonderful man keep us safe, but he turned out to be a knowledgeable tour guide, knowing where fossils were buried/hidden to protect them (I could see that the area had been ravaged by illegal fossil collectors) but he taught us all so much about the Forests and the surrounding areas. We found ourselves transported back millions of years, imagining how far back the sea would have been and what the landscape would have looked like. This was truly a memorable and beautiful walk on the wild side, which I hope that my grandchildren will one day get to experience.

Red Dessert

Reviewed By Terrence H

A small (200m) dessert of barren red sand and wind sculptures lying within a lush green grass meadow. It is the strangest occurrence and is rated as the worlds smallest dessert.
Well worth the visit to see this strange landscape. Pity to see that some locals have destroyed portions of this landscape by driving and practicing their 4x4 skills in the area.

Directions are best if you follow for Beaver Creek and carry on a few kms further up the road.
We intended to go mountain biking thinking we could hire bikes. We couldn't and you won't be able to either.
So Mrs B and I walked. Fantastic through plantations, forest and by the gorge. Crags view well worth going to (ants best by the seat!). Nice cafe to start and finish the trip.
