St. Mary's Lighthouse and Visitor Centre

Reached between the tides via a short causeway, St. Mary's has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island. The Lighthouse, completed in 1898 on a hazardous coast for shipping, remained operational until 1984 when it was superseded by modern navigational techniques. Since then the Lighthouse and former keepers' cottages have been operated as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council. The surrounding Nature Reserve contains an area of rockpools, clifftop grassland, a beach and newly created wetland habitats.Wherever possible we are open seven days a week between May and September, and during weekends and school holidays in the winter. However, it is not possible for us to open on some days because of tidal conditions. The stated opening times can also be subject to variations on occasion due to weather affecting the times of the tide.

With modern technology, even if YOU check the board in the car park (which tells you about tide times) those responsible (I found) cant get it right!...the day we visited, and its a lovely spot-parking charges are a bit high, the tide was due in an hour before we went across the causeway (on foot) to be on the side of the Lighthouse. We were only on the Island for 10 minutes and the causeway was covered in water, so yes, we got our feet wet and you don't get a car parking refund! bear this in mind when you visit, it is a good spot, lovely lighthouse-eyes on the tide though, as those responsible may not get it right, they didn't when we were there

Whitley Bay Links and Beach

Reviewed By Philip E

Great to see all the improvements. The links and prom are well-maintained and recent work has greatly improved the area. The links is fab as it keeps cars well back from the prom and beach. The sand is very good. We collected some sea-glass which my wife hopes to make into jewellery. The waves were massive! Can't go to Whitley Bay and not take in the miles or waving golden sand!

Seaton Delaval Hall

This was a great place to visit, I loved the history of the family, Delaval, Astley and Hastings, they sounded quirky. The hall is worth exploring, the main building, the stables and west wing are fascinating, and the west wing has amazing furnishings, I loved the gallery with the tapestry seat covers that told the story of a joust, and the visit was helped by the very helpful, friendly volunteer guides. The talk on Saturday at 1230 was so interesting about the history of the family thro the years. Do take time to explore the grounds too, their is an ice house and church, as well as nice garden. The cafe had a limited range of foods, but staff were friendly and I enjoyed a tasty scone and coffee.

It's been a while since we were at this theatre-- we live miles away so it isn't our first venue of choice.
On arrival my handbag was searched.(as happens in most places nowadays)
The staff were very pleasant but I was amazed to be told I should not be taking in a glass bottle of perfume.
Never heard that before!
I should have asked where on the tickets does it state this but was so stunned I said would you like to spray it to check it is perfume (Clarins by the way for anyone interested)
Understandably they were worried about bottles being hurled at the stage.
We went upstairs to have a pre show drink in the bar.
Prices are average for theatres.
The ladies is always nice and clean here.
On to the show--
We visited to see the New Amen Corner.
This group is always excellent having seen them many times in other places, usually backing other singers.
The N.A.C. were in my opinion the stars of the show.
Mike Pender (ex Searchers) struggled to hit the high notes of his most famous songs and Mike D'Abo (ex Manfred Mann) was the same.
This is why they are so keen for audience participation singing the chorus etc.
Last night brought it home, to me they are singing memories for most people and most people hear what they want to hear!
One thing I would change was the smoke machine that kept belting out smoke by the bucket full.
Maybe they should look at a haze machine instead to save the front two rows being engulfed in smoke.
An entertaining night out.
