Omodos (Greek: 'Ομοδος) is a village in the Troödos Mountains of Cyprus. It is also located in the Limassol District of Cyprus and is 80 kilometers from the city of Nicosia. The village produces a lot of wine and holds a wine festival every August. You can visit a 17th-century stone-built monastery via a cobblestone path and sample local wine for free at many outlets. You will also find a good mix of restaurants including traditional tavernas and a few modern bars housed in traditional buildings.

We were lucky enough to be shown around the monastery by a local lady. It is a very well restored monastery and church. There are lots of lovely carved doors and ceilings. You can see many icons and old robes etc. The views from the monastery are great.
For a small donation you can light a candle if you wish.
Well worth a visit the views are fantastic.

A lovely winery/ taverna in the centre of the town in Omidos. A few steps away from the ministry, it has lovely street viewing and relaxing. It can get quite busy around lunchtime. Prices are somewhat touristic but still not bad. Free internet access available. Staff are friendly.

While visiting the Monastery of the Holy Cross in Omodos, I came across the hall used for the housing of the National Struggle Museum.
I had no idea that such significant museum is housed out here and that I would be moved so much with its interesting exhibits and stories behind the heroes.
It is a museum that certainly should not to be missed.
HISTORY: The museum stands to present the contribution of Omodos to the national struggles since 1960 when a group of inhabitants had the concept for its creation.
The national liberation struggle of Cyprus against the British colonial administration, known as the EOKA struggle, started on the 1st of April 1955 and ended with the Zurich -- London agreements in February of 1959.
The Struggle of EOKA is the culmination of long-standing struggles on behalf of the People of Cyprus in order to conquer their freedom.
Omodos was always present in all of the struggles for the freedom of Cyprus. Its contribution dates back to the first quarter of the previous century, while the price paid was heavy. Arrests, imprisonment, the blowing up of a hide-out, and other catastrophes.
With Church Steward Dositheos, from the Holy Monastery of the Holy Cross in Omodos, as the head figure, the inhabitants actively participated in the Greek revolution. Omodos's inhabitants also actively participated in the two World Wars, as well as in the national liberation struggle of EOKA 1955 -- 1959.

We have found it by chance as it is not hugely advertised. The wine master who comes from Spain was called and we were given an outstanding tour of the winery. It is a part of ETKO wineries and has changed from bulk production to quality wine production and on this tour it was evident they have some amazing wines. It was also the only tour that we could try wines in different stages. It is a state of the art facility with large underground isothermic cellar.
It is possible to use bus to get there but they are not frequent. It might be better to contact them in advance.

We chanced by this wonderful little winery while driving to Mount Olympus.
There is a small museum and a number of wines to taste. The owner was lovely and his wines are incredible.
Be warned - you have to pay with cash and whilst there is an ATM in Omodos we could not get money out with a MasterCard. Fortunately we had another to hand and finally drove off with 6 bottles - if we were allowed more weight for the flight home we would have bought a lot more.
Do not miss this place - it has, in my opinion, the best wines in Cyprus.
