If youre staying anywhere near Ag Nic then you must visit Voulisma beach. Fantastic golden sandy beach and crystal clear water. We visited in September and there was plenty of room and it was not crowded. There is a reasonably priced bar at the top of the beach which has toilets and changing facilities.
There are showers on the beach and water-sports for the more adventurous.

This is a beach in the coast town of Istro, Crete Greece.
Istro is a modern village that runs along the coast line of Mirabella bay. So you have in fact got the choice of three or four Beaches all completely different and within walking distance of one another. Although from one end to the other might be a bit far if you have young children or a lot of stuff to carry. At the one end you have Golden beach. This has two kanteenas one at each end. The first one is at the bottom of a track from the main road and is more natural, with tables on the beach but no toilet facilities and on is at the other end at the top by the car park. You pass through it on your way down to sand and beds below. This beach offer some water sports in the summer. Staying in the same area but moving around the corner are some coves and a smaller narrower beach, it can be quieter there but no facilities. The coves generally get taken quite early, but they are also in shadow first. You have to leave this area and go back up onto the main road to get to the next beach. It is about half a mile away past restaurants, tavernas and shops. You take the slip road down past the super market and a bar called Stoa. You can drive down this road if you prefer and there are car parks near the next beach which is at the bottom of the road. This one is called St Penteleimon and has a small yellow and blue chucrh one it. It has a play area for young children and toilet facilities but no water sports, Unfortunately it no longer has a kanteena but Stoa the bar you passed on your way down does serve food. Their menu is limited to the food is generally very good. If you still haven't managed to find what you are looking for, or you are coming from the opposite direction there is always Karovoustasi which has Maria's kanteena, free beds and toilet facilities. Depending from which direction you find this beach you may argue whether it is in Vathi or Istron as you drop off the main road just outside Vathi and before the Istron junction, if you are traveling by car from Agios Nikolaos. This one is well worth the visit if just for lunch. Sit by the sea, watching the waves crash on the shore as you eat your Greek salad, tzatziki and chips. Heaven... Just to add that of course the Beaches are not closed at all during the year it is seasonal for the kanteenas and water sports.

Thanks to Lydia and her husband for their friendly and warm hospitality in taking us to the village of Kritsa, a little out of Agios Nikolaos, for a culinary adventure with Kyria Argyro (Mrs Argyro)! An afternoon was spent underneath the vines at this white-washed village hotel where we cooked with Mrs Argyro stewed chicken with potatoes and carrots in a red wine sauce and also Cretan-style "tiganites" (mini-fried pancakes). Mrs Argyro also treated us to plenty of Cretan raki, local wine and "mezzedes" with her homemade fava beans, "trahana" (Greek wheat) and dolmades. It was an afternoon spent in the sun, under the vines, without a care in the world - reminiscent of what it would have been to have lived in the 1950s - in touch with soil, with nature and with the things in life that are wholesome and essential.
Would definitely do again and recommend to all of you! Thank you to Lydia and Christos!

Beautiful warm blue sea ( a few pebbles to scramble across to get to the water !)
No cafe or snack bar but there is a shop close by.
Loungers and umbrellas available at a good price.
Off the beaten track and plenty of shady parking
A proper Greek beach!

Sandy beach and shallow in places. There are some pebble area where I advise sand shoes to be warn. Sun loungers with parasols are available and there is also a cantina open from early morning to late. Late as in when you leave! The food is limited in choice but the quality isn't. Well worth a visit to the beach.
