Ürümqi (/ʊˈrʊmtʃi, ˌʊrʊmˈtʃiː/, Uyghur pronunciation: [ʏrʏmˈtʃi]; Chinese: 乌鲁木齐; pinyin: Wūlǔmùqí; Uyghur: ئۈرۈمچى, ULY: Ürümchi, UYY: Ürümqi; from Oirat "beautiful pasture") is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China in Northwest China. Ürümqi was a major hub on the Silk Road during China's Tang dynasty, and developed its reputation as a leading cultural and commercial center during the Qing dynasty in the 19th Century.

We visited this place early in the morning to avoid the crowd
There are sections dedicated to the minority group of tribes in xianjiang
The wax statures are lively
They also showed many original mummies unearned along the Tianshan area at least 3 thousand years old
The clothings of the tribes showed detailed arts of embroidery
Worth visiting!!!

Formerly known as Yaochi (Jade Lake), it is guarded by the stately peaks and offers a spectacular sight.
Just like all the national attractions, you have to pay to get in
The price is 220 RMB which is quite steep in xianjiang
After you enter the gate, you have to switch to a smaller shuttle bus to to the lake which is another 40-45 minutes ride
When we arrive, it started to rain, then comes the snow
It was freezing cold!!!
The lake is quite small, and there is boat tour available
Due to presence of fog, there is no boat ride....who wants to go on a boat ride on a cold day
In the afternoon there is a short ten minutes break
The sun comes out,
The scenery is beautiful, with blue water and green and yellow trees at the background
Within five minutes come the cloud, the fog
It was a beautiful scene caught on camera, then nothing is visible again!!!
For those who have not visited a lake, when the weather gets cold,it is not worth visiting

I went to Tianshan Mountains last autumn with a travelling group.I have never imagined a view like this. The Valleys crossed and the Mountains were kind of haze because of the smog,I thought I was in my dream. There were many spectacular lakes on the Mountains. The ticket was 210 RMB.Just be careful because the roads were steep and put on more clothes!

This is a good museum to visit. But you have to make an appointment before you go. There are many animal specimens (vertebrates, birds, etc.), soil samples, plant fossils. It shows you the whole geographic feature of Xinjiang, how people overcame the desert condition. It is free.

Taking half a day to explore Red Hill and the Gardens, steps and Buddhist temple there about a week ago. The entry fee is reasonable, the walks are lovely, careful on the steps they can be treacherous and the temple at the top looks much better from close up than from a distance. It is something to do in Urumqi and not bad exercise at all.

So we skipped up this little hill on a really hot day to see the icon of Urumqi and were quite disappointed. It is just a little tower on a hill. You do get good views of modern Urumqi city but in my opinion it's not worth the effort.

I walked to the Bazaar from my hotel a couple kilometers north, and it was very interesting to see the city slowly become more Uyghur and less Han. Once you pass through security at the Bazaar, however, it feels like you've left China altogether. This is like nothing else I've seen. The atmosphere was nice, even if it was crowded, and there wasn't really anywhere to sit if you wanted a rest. Great place for one-stop shopping and a glimpse of Uyghur culture.

You can hardly miss this on the road from Urumqi to Turpan but I would not go out of my way to visit it. I'm not convinced the building here is the Australian Pavilion from Shanghai Expo - if it is then it is the internals only as the Iron Ore outer casing is nowhere to be seen. (Rio Tinto may have asked for it back???) The area is certainly windblown - the pavilion is closed and parts of it are blowing away!! Not much further on, heading south to Turpan, is an old Fort on the left hand side of the highway. You have to get off the highway to get to it then to re-enter the highway you have to offroad for quite a few bumpy kilometres. Doesn't get many visitors although an infrastructure has been put in place to support tourism. I still haven't been able to source historical info about it other than the fact that it was the site of a massacre at some point in China's history.

Free Admission, no hills, nice lakes when they are filled with water, plenty to look at-- flowers, people singing, playing cards, Chinese Chess, many small children with grandparents, acceptable bathrooms. Not very large, but fine for a pleasant, shaded ramble in the middle of a hot day
