The abbey is situated beneath a wooded mountain and surrounded by ,fields - very peaceful. The older part of this church, particularly the crypt, is quite exquisite, but the new addition seems incongrous and does not fit comfortably. There are no signs left of the old Cistercian abbey, the buildings of which have been converted into apartemts and offices.

We dined at the restaurant on Sunday for lunch. We had been eating all the traditional Umbrian pastas and starters for our noon meals, but had missed a good steak. Being from Chicago, we were hesitant to order steak in Italy for fear of disappointment. Well, we were not disappointed. Well prepared, just the way we liked it. The portion was smaller than what we get in the states, but it didn't lack flavor and gave us some room for the great pasta and dessert.

My friends and I attended a wonderful cooking class at Calagrana. It was demo and hands on and Alberto was such a pleasure to watch and explained things so clearly. He also gave numerous suggestions for variations and uses for the things we learned to create.
We created a three course lunch that we shared to include a warm chicken liver and polenta crouton salad, homemade eggplant ravioli in a butter thyme sauce and boned and stuffed chicken legs with potato pears. It was such fun!
I highly recommend you try this while in the Umbertide area. It is quite accessible for even beginners and a real bargain especially with the lovely lunch included. Alberto and Ely are wonderful, welcoming hosts! Go!

Come ride the many trails, winding through the enchanting hills of Umbria.Take a step back in time as you wander throgh olive groves, meadows and woodlands. All levels of riding experience are welcome. Our horses are gentle and good also for children. Trail rides from one hour to all day exurcions with an experienced guide, speaking english, french or german.
I was staying with my friend Jackie nearby. and we thought it would be fun to go out for a ride in the countryside. The trails at Marana are remote and beautiful, through the quiet, wooded hills, with glorious views into this historic landscape.
Veronica and her family are marvellous hosts - so kind and friendly - and her horses are willing, responsive, gentle, and extremely well cared for. Helmets and half chaps are available to borrow. Veronica speaks English very well, and as we rode she told us of some of the history and detail of the area.We had a such a super ride on the Monday, we decided to go again.
On our second ride, when I fell off (which was my own stupid fault!) Veronica was super-quick to react and get the help I needed. THANK YOU, VERONICA! XX
I highly recommend riding at Marana - this beautiful part of Umbria is even lovelier from horseback.

This small pasticceria is quite unassuming as it sits on the edge of a small industrial estate and looks nothing from the outside. However once inside you will find some delicious cakes and pastries -whether you plan to take them away or sit in for a quick coffee and sugar rush.
The staff are helpful and friendly, so try out your Italian and visit!

We briefly visited this church one afternoon, and probably spent about three minutes in here . There wasn't a great deal inside, and the frescos which adorned the walls were badly worn away.
