Very impressed - the Octagonal 3-storey pagoda, the 16 Rakans (arhats) pavillion, the statues of priests Yogyu Enin and Shokoku Isen and, last but not least, the quiet cemetery and the surrounding forest are great. Mark the Kuro-mon (Black Gate) marking the old border of the temple territory.

A beautiful shrine with gorgeous outdoor shrines surrounding it. No access charge and set against a hillside forest. It just oozes character and history. My choice for this area.

You will find lots of castle ruin in Japan. We came here at 5pm thinking the castle would be closed. But luckily you still can walk the grounds only the tower is closed. Walk around the surroundings and it features all the parts of the castle, tower, moat etc

The installation artworks were interesting, but I was more impressed by the location. Although it was late June, it was not hot around the mountain. So my friend and I enjoyed walking around the outdoor museum and viewing the city of Ueda surrounded by high Mountains. The admission was only JPY1000.

The ride on a quaint, local 2-car train took 30-minutes one way. The roundtrip ticket cost 1180-yen (same price as an all day ticket). Nearby the stations are several temples one can visit. I never got to try the onsens but I'll leave that for the next time.

Gives an understanding of the type of place mountain fortresses were located. Great view of the Ueda / Shioda Plain. But a fuller "castle" experience can be had at Ueda Castle down below.

The Edo-style shops along the street are quite atmospheric - and once you get to the street's end, cross the road and visit Ueda Daijingu shrine; do not miss the Okazaki Brewery and taste (or by as a souvenire) some nihon-shu (sake). Make a stop at a noodle restaurant.

My partner and I don't get to Sugadaira every season but enjoy it every time. The ski areas, Davos, Pine Peak, Taro, offer skiing from beginner to intermediate/advanced/expert. There are hot spring hotels here, although many Japanese have beso (second homes) in Sugadaira, about a 30-40 minute drive from Ueda City.
