It is a perfect place for a family with kids to enjoy a whole day. The huge park has zoo, botanical garden and a natural history museum. Among them I love the museum best. It is no doubt one of the finest of the sort in Japan. It also has an amusement park. This place is dubbed as Toyohashi Non Hoi Park.

The Toyohashi Tram was perfect for our needs for an afternoon visit to the Yoshida Castle and Toyohashi Park. We arrived in the city early in the afternoon and were able to use the tram to do some afternoon sight seeing.
There is a tram stop in front of the JR Toyohashi station, which was right where our hotel was located.
We tried to purchase tickets from a ticket machine, but we couldn’t get it to accept our money. A friendly city resident came to offer assistance and agreed that the machine was broken. He told us we could pay for the ride on the tram and that it was a flat fee of ¥150. It seems that locals use the tram much more than tourists - we were the only Westerners we saw on the tram, or in all of Toyohashi for that matter.
We got off at City Hall, photographed that building and walked from there to the castle park. We took the tram back to the station at the end of our visit.
It all worked very smoothly and the tram provided us with a nice little tour of a small part of the city.

The Natural History Museum exceeded expectations! It was intimate and easy to navigate, and the interactive displays were very fun -- there was one where you can see how you would move as an ape and another on facial evolution into the past and future. The local section and video on sea turtles were interesting as well!

Yoshida Castle view is better from riverside than the parkside. From the river you can see the stone walls very well and Kurogane Tower, being the symbol of the park. When I went there in September this year, Kurogane Yagura is under repair and it will be finished around December 20. Dry moats and earthen forts are nicely kept as well.

This is a fine park with ancient and much beloved trees. Many paths under very tall trees all seem to take you through the grounds to the castle. The trees near the castle were particularly imposing and many had complex root systems that pushed out of the ground and made intricate patterns on the earth. There also were many twisted, convoluted trees, evidence of strong winds.
Most of the trees were evergreens, and thus only a few trees showed autumn colors when we were there in mid-November. Even though they weren’t colorful, the trees were impressive for their very size and number. We have seen photos of the park during sakura season and the place looks just lovely.

Kalmia is a bit department store in Toyohashi main station. Downstairs there is a food court, and on the way up there are lots of restaurants and cafes. The top floor has a big Muji, and there are lots of clothes, shoes and accessories shops too. There's also a phone shop (Softbank I think), and cute boutiques. There's a Claire's Accessories, and a big book/comic store. Basically if you need food, drink, gifts or clothes you're in the right place! I like it because it's convenient and reasonably priced.

We took the tram to see Yoshida Castle but the stop for it was at Shiyakusho-mae. Taking advantage of the opportunity, we walked around City Public Hall to look at this National Important Cultural Property. It’s a curiously powerful building, described as Neo-Romanesque but with lashings of 1930’s architecture.
An overpass on the street corner affords closer views of and better angles on the statues on the building and since the mid-afternoon sun was particularly good, we stopped here to take photos before heading to the Castle. We took more photos of City Hall after visiting the castle before getting back on the tram.
Fine eagle statues on the ground to the right of the building, but the light on them was never good when we were there. We took what photos we could.
The building itself was busy with traffic as many elder citizens were struggling up and down the steep stairs to conduct whatever business they had with the city.
