10 Things to Do in Sun City That You Shouldn't Miss

September 16, 2017 Flossie Demartino

Now that casinos have spread in South Africa, Sun City is no longer the only gaming hotspot in the country, but it's still visually dramatic. Located two hours from Johannesburg, it's a sprawling complex of luxury hotels, restaurants and Vegas-style shows on the edge of Pilanesberg Game Reserve.

Pilanesberg National Park

Reviewed By RLNielsen - West Lafayette, Indiana

I spent part of a day with a friend driving on our own through the park. We saw a wide collection of animal species and got some great photos of blue wildebeests, zebras, elephants, lions, impalas, hartebeests (sp?), hippos, black rhinos, giraffes, etc. The scenic views of the park landscapes are almost worth the price of admission itself.
The roads are a little rough, but reasonable given they are mostly not hard surfaced. While there were quite a few other vehicles, including “safari transports”, on the roads, we never felt crowded or hurried.
One of the high lookout points, I forgot which, provides awesome views of the park’s topography and landscapes.

We loved the view from the tower. It was 360 degrees of beauty. We had an opportunity to take a few pics. Very impressive and I hear you can arrange a special dinner up there. Next time we will try to schedule. Amazing panaramic views.

Kwena Crocodile Farm

This crocodile sanctuary is fun for all ages; observe, learn about and even feed these impressive creatures.

Reviewed By DevMar - Sandton, South Africa

We have visited the Crocodile Farm for many years but this visit indicated that the place has deteriorated tremendously over the years. The entrance fee was expensive. Whereas previously a guide would take you around and the tour was informative, this time although there were 3 guides sitting at the entrance they told us to just walk around. The men cleaning the enclosures were smoking as they raked the leaves. The entire place looked tatty and there was a total lack on interest in making guests feel welcome.

Lost City Golf Course

The Lost City Golf Course was designed by famed South African golfing figure, Gary Player. This spectacular par-72 course is a cart course, complete with a state-of-the-art clubhouse, and is a short stroll from The Palace of the Lost City. It features a water hazard of 20 live Nile crocodiles on the 13th hole and offers facilities such as a driving range, and a fully equipped golf Pro Shop.

This a very beautiful course which is currently in a excellent condition! The course is also (like the Sun City Gary Player Course) designed by Gary Player. On hole 13 there is even a crocodile pit. Don't go in there if you hit your ball into it! LOL! Just next to the course there is a game reserve, so there is a chance to see some elephants or other animals. We only saw some Warthogs, Impalas and Mongoose besides a lot of birds! There are some difficult dog legs so take a spotter. You will loose some strokes if you don't. I really enjoyed playing there!

Valley of Waves

The Valley of Waves is the central feature of the Lost City at Sun City. It is one of the most advanced water parks in the world, dominated by the Roaring Lagoon. When waves are not generated, a bobbing cycle is generated in a diamond pattern. All Resort residents enter the park free of charge by presenting their resident cards. Day visitors pay an entrance fee to the park.

The valley of the waves is a must go place in Sun City, it is a lot of fun.
The artificial wave generator is fun for the whole family and it is the closest to being actually at a beach resort,
The music is very nice, and the newly added Zip line is great adventure around the place.
My favorite adventure is the Bullet as well as the Slide of Courage, these are extreme adrenaline, however there is also other fun activities for the whole family.
Great Time Indeed, Highly Recommended

Gary Player Country Club

The Gary Player Golf Course needs no introduction. This world-renowned course was designed by Gary Player, and is the home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, now part of the European Tour Race to Dubai. This picturesque 18 hole, par 72 walking course is surrounded by a 5km scenic running trail. Since its opening in 1979, the course has been acknowledged as South Africa's premier championship test of golf. The home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge since 1981, this immaculately groomed layout has received rave reviews from the world's top golfers, who agree that it is both demanding and fair. This course has been consistently rated as one of the best in South Africa, and compares with the best in the world. The first course in South Africa to be constructed to stringent USGA specifications, this layout is famed for its length (over 7000 metres from the championship tees), its dramatic backdrops of the Pilanesberg Mountains, and its spectacular indigenous vegetation that flanks the fairways. The first facility in South Africa to be built with multiple tees, the course can be enjoyed by golfers of all levels of skill, but even from the forward tees it remains a challenge. A distinguishing feature of the course is its greens complexes which allows for interesting pin positions on the clover-shaped putting surfaces protected by strategically placed bunkers.

Knowing that the greens had been hollow-tined the week before, I played GPCC. It was interesting to see the stands being built and other facets being prepared for the Nedbank Challenge in November. Given the time of the year, the weather was superb, but the state of the course was beautiful. Clubhouse was helpful, fairways were lush, rough was growing. The greens will be superb, but I struggled to play on them this trip.

One of the many fun things to do when at Sun City. Suitable for young and old alike. Journey begins with crossing over a very impressive swing bridge. The maze is certainly puzzling but not overly difficult. Your reward for reaching the end of the maze is a rest stop offering an array of micro brewed beers and cool drinks.

The Waterworld and the whole Sun City complex is a man-made oasis, perfect if you're looking for a different kind of an experience in South Africa. Few hours from Joburg, Waterworld has an amazing artificial beach and massive waves being produced every 20 mins by the artificial waterfall. The whole "beach" experience is enhanced by beach sand, palms and streams running around the area. All in all, a great experience, perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway from the city.

Predator World

Reviewed By Maryam G - Providence, Rhode Island

We went to the Predator World because we did not see lions in our first game drive. But Predator World is more than African cats. It’s a great place to see big cats from all over the world, plus some other animals like hyenas, porcupines, meerkats, and ostriches. Most of the animals here were born in captivity and would not survive in the wild. We were not able to go inside to the animals because we were visiting with our three year old, but older kids and adults can do that for an extra fee. Our guide was very accommodating and knowledgeable. He had personally raised many of the animals there and we could see a bond between him and many of the cats. Overall a great experience for all of us.
There was also a nice little gift shop on site where we ended up buying most of our souvenirs.
