Take a ride on the steepest cog railway in Austria from St. Wolfgang to the top of the 1,783 m tall Schafberg. In 35 minutes, the SchafbergBahn will carry you to the top. With its striking summit, this is one of Austria’s most beautiful and scenic Mountains, treating visitors to incomparable views of the surrounding natural landscapes.
We viewed the Schafberg Cog Railway at the beginning of the year on a TV Show "Greatest Trains Around the World". As we were going overseas later in the year, I booked a night at the Schafbergspitze Hotel at the top of the mountain, so we would enjoy the WHOLE experience. Words & photos cannot portray it adequately. Revelled in the train trip & in September had great weather - sunny & warm in St Wolfgang where it is situated. Surreal to be at the top taking in the views both during the day, at sunset & at night. We enjoyed the dining experience at night with typical Austrian home style menu [loved the Apple Struedal with Vanilla Custard] & couldn't help going to the window regularly to watch the sunset. Worth the extra money to stay at the hotel without a doubt!

this is just outside Strobl you can walk to the area, once there climb up and head for the deer reserve mildly challenging and when you reach the top a very very welcome bier and nice food inshore for you, the waiter was very friendly and enjoyed practicing his english as do most Austrians are able to speak english but it is nice to try to speak a little German as we gave them a laugh with our dreadful accents, worth the climb though and much easier going back down hill.

An extra star if the gondolas were a little more modern. However, that aside, the trip is fantastic with the alps and lakes opening up before you as you climb ever higher. A little expensive at around €46 for 2 but well worth it and something that should be on the list if you’re in this area.

Summer Season 2017 ( 29 April – 6 November 2017) Since 1959, Katrin cable car has brought a range of visitors to the summit. Enjoy a charming 15-minute drive to more than 1,400 m above sea level with spectacular views! Spa town Bad Ischl as the heart of the Salzkammergut with its "Darling", Mount Katrin, has been a place of recreation since the imperial period. While the city with its cultural diversity and the historic buildings and places leaves nothing to be desired, Bad Ischl's Darling provides a unique nature experience. The impressive mountain scenery and the almost infinite expanse have always brought people to marvel. 7 LAKES VIEW Enjoy fabulous views: to the south the magnificent Lake Hallstattsee, to the west the majestic Lake Wolfgangsee, and further beyond, perched higher up, Lake Fuschlsee. Lake Nussensee with its Emerald color, the mystical Lake Schwarzensee and to north-east Lake Traunsee are also to see. At perfect weather conditions you can see the Bavarian Lake Tachingersee in the far distance. NUMEROUS Panorama ROUTES The network of the circular walk extends from lovely Feuer- and Rosenkogerl westwards to the imperial Katrin summit and further to the beautiful Elferkogel, followed by the romantic Hainzen and the mighty Rosskopf - always accompanied by the impressive mountain scenery of the Salzkammergut that will inspire you. Multi-generation Via Ferrata Apart from fun and action for those who want to be active, the promising fixed rope route (suitable for families) offers a fabulous view of the most beautiful lakes of the Salzkammergut region. As highlight, the ascent ends at the majestic cross on the summit of Mount Katrin.
From Katrin one can view three Valleys that lead away from Bad Ischl. Plenty of trails are available. Decent restaurant next to upper landing. The rides up and down are spectacular.

As a gin fan I had to visit this place: besides their local heroes (Zirbenschnapps, Poire Williams, etc) they also produce their own Gin, 3 of them were given Gold Medals at « World-Spirits Award ». The boutique and service were very nice and you can taste the different gins.

Here you can see the number of animals such as goats, small pigs, horses and other. Besides the animals, here children can have fun in the small park with slides, swings, pedal cars. A place where you can spend, 2 or 3 hours or half of day on condition that you love animals...

It doesn’t matter if you are an expert in architecture and history or not. Entering this church shows you a rather good way to combine gothic and baroque architecture. The building itself is a pure gothic church building also showing some criteria of an initial Romanic building. But windows and arches are built in a pure gothic way. Especially remarkable is the high altar erected in the late 15th century by Michael Pacher. It is one of the most important late gothic pieces of art.
In addition later built altars like th altar of Thomas Schwanthaler are worth a visit as well as the rebuilt cell of St. Wolfgang visible in a side chapel of the church. Especially on warmer days a visit of this church is a beloved alternative to cool down somehow. The silence and atmosphere of the church invite you to rest.

Hiked to Schwarzensee from St. Wolfgang and then down to Strobl. About a 10 mile route. The route up and down from the lake is fairly steep, but the ascent is pretty short (1/2-3/4 mile). The lake is beautiful, surrounded by Mountains. There was a lakeside restaurant with a beer garden. We didn't eat there, but it would be a nice setting for a meal. Hike down to Strobl took us through a gorge and around the bottom of Wolfgangsee near Strobl. This was one of the more beautiful lakeside trails in the area.

St. Giligen is a charming village on the shore of Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee) outskirt of Salzburg. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's mother was born here, and Mozart's sister Nannerl moved here after her marriage. Cafe Nannerl in the village is named after Mozart's sister Nannerl. "Mozart House", located at a prime location of the village, is the house where Mozart's mother was born and his sister lived after her marriage. Cute statute of Mozart, playing violin, is standing at the center of Mozartplatz. In addition to the leisure seeking visitors, this village receives many visitors who are taking part of the famous Sound of Music Tour originating from Salzburg which includes this village in their itinerary.

Outside and inside there is so much fun for kids in the age of about 3 until about 13. So even on rainy days this is a good option. We paid with 2 adults and two children (4 and 6) 31,60 euro, which is a very reasonable price. For one atraction, outside, you have to pay one euro extra everytime you want to go on them (little motors on a nice track). I will add some photos later to give an impression.
