The tour was part of our day at the winery which included the best meal we had in Portugal (lunch at their restaurant which I reviewed under the restaurant "Esporao").
Lana was an excellent tour guide - knowledgeable, personable, efficient - and able to keep some difficult guest on track.
We bought a bottle of the wine that is made in a clay amphora - it's earthy and delicious - unique taste. We also bought a bottle of their reserve blend for the cellar. Do not leave without buying some olive oil - you can taste either on the tour or at the store. Many of the varieties are available at the Duty Free at Lisbon airport, but not the organic version, so if you like that one (and we did!) buy it at the store.
This is one of the very best winery tours that I've done on 4 continents and I would highly recommend it to understand a bit about Portugal's Alentejo region.

The silhouette of this tower is very well known in Portugal because it is th logo of Esporão estate and appears on all their labels.
During a tailor made guided visit of the whole estate, we stopped by the tower and our guide gave us an historic overview of it.
Interesting but not exceptional.

This is a very simple and unassuming church located in the center of town.
The inside (ie: walls, ceiling, pillars) has been painted entirely white-washed. In certain areas where the paint has peeled, or been chipped-off, you can see pink marble stone. The side chapels are empty, the main alter is void of any significant beauty.
During medieval times, when a town anticipated being invaded they sometimes would paint the inside of their church white, to preserve the paintings, & decorations underneath. When the treat was over, they would remove the paint and restore the church to its previous grandeur. I think that this is what's happened here.
In its current state, this church has no significant beauty of value to offer.

In the center of the picturesque town of Reguengos de Monsaraz, you can visit one of the world’s most unusual wineries. Keeping alive a tradition initiated by the Romans over 2000 years ago, the Jose de Sousa winery is equipped with 114 clay amphorae, a fermentation method as rare as it is old. The old cellars are below ground level and contain the urns and two open lagares for treading the grapes
Fantastic experience in an unique and secular winery in Alentejo. I booked for the same day and had a tour for just myself and my girlfriend. It's a big and historic winery where you can feel the real soul of the portuguese wine. It's not only about the wine itself but to get to know about history. I had a chance to see the bottles which were from 1949 found buried somewhere in there and were probably hidden during the war. The guide was great and spoke a perfect english, so if you are not a portuguese speaker I highly recommend it. Overall, an memorable experience.

The village of Reguengos de Monsaraz in the Alentejo region of Portugal is, itself, worth a visit. It had wonderful vistas and a (currently used) bullring inside an ancient castle.
The renaissance fresco entitled "The Good and Bad Judges" is located in a small museum next to the Igreja de Sao Tiago (the Church of Saint Tiago). It has been carefully restored and extensively studied.
Its subject is rather taboo: a good judge making fair judgements and a bad, two-faced judge taking bribes.
It is a stop well worth making.

We made the Carmim loja in the main praça (square) our first stop in Reguengos de Monsaraz, and it proved to be a great overview of the local wine region. We came in around 11 am, and the primary wine tour guide (on his day off) was giving some tutelage to a new host, and we benefited from their discussion with us. The loja does not offer wine tastings in a formal sense, but allows you to try any of the wines you wish, and then, hopefully for them, purchase them. The orientation begins with a series of videos showing the area, including the Castelo de Monsaraz, and the Barragem (reservoir) around which many of the vineyards for the cooperative are located. A full tour and tasting out at the winery can be arranged from here, and there are comfortable places to sit while you try a wine or two. Very nice customer service.
