The ladies here were really friendly and the small shop was big on authentic gifts to take home to friends with lovely handmade cocoa butter enriched soaps, oils, lip balms, chocolate bars and candies and even crafts and Tshirts. In addition to the nice gifts (cash only USD accepted) they happily show you the process of chocolate making in a 10-15 min. small tour which was fun and done very nicely. Support this local group, Punta Gorda is lovely and Authentic!

A trip out to Lime Caye was an expensive journey 39 miles out to the reef. We thought we were getting two full days - instead it was less than 24 hours. At Lime Caye they turned off the electricity at night so we couldn't have fans going. The trip out in the little "Penga" was not too bad but on the way back everything got drenched! We knew the weather was going to be rough but we thought the hospitality would be better - what a disappointment! At a cost of US$550 with one night's stay and one breakfast, lunch and dinner we understand why many people find Belize expensive - certainly Garbutts is.

After visiting Blue Creek cave and Nim Li Punit with Bruno several years ago, I was looking forward to trying one of his new tours. The "Crystal River and Cacao" tour thoroughly exceeded my expectations.
After an easy 40 minute hike from San Pedro Columbia, we arrived at Ignacio Ash's farm where he grows more than 20 varieties of cacao. We spent the morning in the shade of the cacao trees sampling the sweet pulp surrounding the seeds of several varieties, and enjoyed lunch with Mr. Ash and his family. We then made our way to the source of the Columbia River by way of a hand-carved wooden dory. "The Source" is a bubbling spring welling up from the stone, and the milky-green color of the water reminded me of the Ozark rivers. Breathtaking! We had plenty of time to swim and explore the surrounding area before quietly poling our way downstream back to the village.
Bruno always places visitors' safely as his top priority, and seems to be continuously looking for new culturally-rich adventures to offer. Another thumbs-up!

At its new location in Punta Gorda, The Maroon Creole Drum School offers classes in Creole and West African drumming, drum making workshops and culture presentations as well as fire hearth cooking classes with traditional recipes. Handmade crafts and art are on sale too. Under the direction of Emmeth Young, one of Belize's most experienced and versatile drummers, the Maroon Drum School aims to educate, share and preserve the music and traditions of the Creole people of Belize. Emmeth is from the small village of Gales Point Manatee, settled by escape, or maroon, slaves in the late 1700's. The Maroon Creole Drum School's project "Drums Not Guns" directly supports local youth mentor-ship and cultural preservation.
We had a fantastic experience with Jill and Emmett. We picked vegies from their garden, helped prepare lunch on the hearthfire stove and then learned to drum. Meantime Jill and Emmett taught us about Belize and Creole culture. They couldn't have been more friendly, warm ,and welcoming. This is a must do if you are in Punta Gorda!
