The road to Puerto tranquillo is amazing. So beautiful. If you have the time stay a night and go to caves in the am. I thought the were ok. The solar eclipse rose the water 6 feet according to tour. Get a small boutique or kayak. Much better experience and photos. Get bus when you can! Not alot

The Exploradores Glacier is a retreating glacier formed from the northern icefield of Chilean Patagonia.
We booked this tour through Hotel El Puesto who has its own guide Rodrigo. The day before we checked with some of the many stalls along the main road. but some told us that their tour was fully booked, (14 persons in a bus).
With our private guide Rodrigo (Rodri, Go!) and slightly more expensive tour we could leave an hour later from Rio Tranquilo than the group tours. The fitting out of the crampons was in their own shed at the park entrance.
The walk through the forest park up to the mirador was fairly easy, but going over the three ridges of 50 m high morene was more difficult. In several places we needed to climb over the boulders as goats. Luckely we had gloves to protect our hands.
Once on the glacier we fitted the crampons and walked along the ice ridges.
Some pictures in a large hole, everyone taking its turn.
Lunch on the ice and than heading back over the three morene hills.
Total walking/climbing time 2 x 2 hrs. Lunch 1 hr. Driving time 2 x 1.5 hrs.

This has been the highpoint so far!! The glaciers are simply an incredible experience as you go very close to the 'WALL' of ice, so close you can hear the calving and actually see them break off and fall into the ocean. I strongly recommend getting in touch with Ian Farmer of Rio Exploradores but equally with Destino Patagonia as we went to the glaciers on a joint tour that was hosted by the latter. Very knowledgeable crew and amazing customer service. But nothing prepares you for the actual viewing of the Glaciers which is simply mind blowing. Make sure you have water proof clothing and dont get soaked in your feet like I did! Whisky IN the rock (the guide fishes out a piece of ice from the ocean and carves out a bit and pours scotch into it:) In that cold, and staring at the glaciers, it is a nice touch:)

Kayak marble caves hike in explorers galcier
My entire experience was top notch! My friend and I booked a private tour of kayaking through marble caves and glacier trekking. Plus airport transfer to/from Balmaceda and accommodation in Tranquilo. The entire process was seamless and the activities were incredible! I was somewhat wary about kayaking, but Felipe made sure I was comfortable and safe. Trekking the glacier was harder than I anticipated, but easy to complete with the help of Felipe. What an incredible way to see some of the untouched beauty of Patagonia! I would absolutely recommend this company.

We are very committed to delivering a high quality service, offering you the opportunity to feel part of a culture full of traditions which, despite the inhospitable climate, have lasted through time.
The guys at Valle Leones were fabulous during our time in Rio. Tranquilo. We had been out to the caves/cathedral/chapel with another company but we wanted to take kayaks. Our guide, Sebastian, was great fun & looked after us well. This trip was totally amazing...MoreDear Amanda, Thank you very much for your opinion. We are happy to know that your experience was good. We hope to see you again in other time!

Wonderful excursion to Laguna San Rafael! We were picked up by owner Alejandro Castillo in Puerto Rio Tranquilo and taken to the starting point of the excursion by van (on the way explanations and photo stop). From there boat trip with interesting things to see on the way, e.g. salmon aqua culture, floating icebergs, a sea lion called "Reina" soaking up the sun, lying on a floating piece of ice.Alejandro got some real glacier ice to serve us a whisky on the rocks with spectacular view of the San Rafael glacier. Food was a warm lunch, very nice in comparison to the usual lunch boxes with Sandwich. Highly recommendable.

There is nothing special or unique about this lake. There is not much wild life (birds) on the lake. If you travel the road to Glacier Exploradores or Bahía Exploradores, you may stop for a couple of minutes, but not more than that...
