Supposedly the biggest and greatest ski resort in Romania, Poiana Brasov is actually a mid-sized ski resort. It has a few good slopes and lifts, but the prices for accommodation and eating out are too high for what you get.

I have been here several times for snowboard, unfortunately most of the times we little snow, so conditions very average. In general, i think you can find better alternatives for ski tourism, else in the world. The mountain was very nice though, just for a visit.

I returned to Poiana for private ski lessons and chose again the R&J ski school.
High level of profesionalism, excellent communication, excellent instructors and stress on safety (I had the chance to take lessons with more than one instructor, and each one improved something).
I also rented skis from the ski school (they also have a ski equipment rental shop) which are of a very high quality and maintained personally by the school owners / managers (in the past I have rented skis from a different source, the equipment was of low quality and badly maintained).
Highly recommended.

In summertime, at Valea Lupului, Buzau county: Modern rafting base with accomodation, rafting trips on Buzau river, other rivers in Romania and abroad. Altitude expeditions and rafting across the world. Licensed guides only. In wintertime, in Poiana Brasov: Ski and snowboard school with over 10 years of experience. Children friendly and smiling instructors.
We went rafting and it was awesome. This team is very experienced, kind and they take a lot of care for safety. So I can only recommend booking these guys. Thanks a lot for an awesome experience! :-)

Alpin SKi Academy groups a number of passionate and experienced ski instructors that offers unique experiences on snow. We include ski and snowboard private lessons or in groups. There is a ski rental shop and free shuttle bus for the hotel clients. For summer we operate a Bike Rental Shop and we guide mountain bike tours around the area.
Just returned from a ski weekend in Poiana, Brasov and would like to recommend the ski services of Alpin Ski Academy. They were very professional and helpful; Daniel even picked me up from Brasov and drove me to the Hotel on his way to work....MoreThank you for the nice words. we are happy that we managed to revive the skiing experience and that you have nice memories taken back home. I will pass the note also to Nicu. looking forward to see you again on slopes. Razvan

Enjoy a beautiful scenery while riding a 3 weeled cart downhill Mountain Postavaru. We guarantee a good portion of adrenaline and fun
Definitely worth visiting, especially if you turn out to be a terrible skier like I did! The tubes are great fun though it can get busy at times. Definitely pay the extra to get the lift pass or it's a long slog walking up each time.
Sleigh area is good fun but do expect to fly out several times!

We (three adults and 5 kids) stopped in here spontaneously. Generally speaking, the horses and the equipment appeared well maintained.
Only two of the adults took to horseback as the youngest child amongst us was a bit scared of the horses.
As soon as we were out of sight from the main staging area, the young men who were assigned to lead the children's ponies started pestering me for a cash tip to ensure that our children were properly tended to on their ponies. I was so livid but couldn't show it. They were suggesting that if I didn't agree to pay them that the children would be in danger. Whenever they asked for money (which was constantly - it made enjoying the scenery impossible) the boys would speed up the ponies which made the kids bounce up and down in a precarious manner. We're talking about 4 kids between the ages of 4 and 8 being put in this position?!?
Moreover, this was not a trail ride; it is a walk on horseback. Each horse was assigned a handler to walk them. I understand that this was needed for the kids but I, myself, didn't need/want this. Hence my review title.

Interski is THE place to rent winter gear in Poiana Brasov, and let me explain why. Firstly I will cover strictly the winter gear rental and then the added story of my first and, until now, only experience, that really made an impression for me. But let’s start from the beginning:
In the most crowded weekend in Poiana Brasov (23-25 Jan 2016), since... ever, I had to rent on a Saturday morning a pair of skis and poles for 3 days (already had my newly purchased ski boots and other miscellaneous necessities - helmet, glasses etc.). The price was fair in my opinion, for a full season day rental, 65 RON per day (less than 15 EUR), totaling in 195 RON for the duration (43 EUR). The skis were intermediate skis, impeccable in quality, chosen at the advice of the staff. I am not the most expert of them all on the slopes, but I've had my share of experiences with ski rental centers in Romania and abroad (Bansko, Deux-Alpes, Solden etc.) and I usually take the recommendation of the staff for ski choice (carving, dimensions, radius etc.)... they get it right most of the times. This time though, it was absolutely perfect! There was no black slope or close encounter with the random slow poke, that I couldn't easily handle and the fact that the skis were almost brand new, added considerably to the experience. All the following interactions with the staff were really helpful, as their suggestion and aid to adjust the ski boots, as it was my first time with them, really improved the strain on my feet/ankles. I felt like I was being counselled by close friends, rather than people I had just met.
But the story that really left an impression happened on that same Saturday at the return of the gear for the day (you can also return it at the end of the rental period, but for me, it was easier to leave it during the night at the rental center, as it is located right at the bottom of the ski slope). As I was changing in my normal boots, someone stole my mobile phone (Allview P8 Energy - not an expensive phone, but it can hold its own quite nicely, with the 6000 mAh battery, 5.5" HD display and 1.3 Mhz quad core processor) that I had carelessly left right next to me. I didn't notice that my phone was gone until I arrived at my car, after leaving the center. Not being sure if I left it there, or it had fallen before or after from my jacket, I returned to the center and asked hopefully if they had found a phone. The manager said that they didn't find or receive a mobile phone, but requested two of the guys to help me. We all searched for about 15 minutes but we couldn't find it and when I called myself it seemed to be powered off. In these dire circumstances, I noticed, what eventually was the salvation way to find it – the surveillance cameras. I asked if they could look over the recordings, as a half an hour, at most, had passed. To be noted that the center was packed with people, but even so, they made an effort to help me. The manager explained then, that they were too busy at that time, but he will gladly help me after the program ended and he would have the time to look over the recordings.
One hour later, when he could check, he told me exactly how a guy sat himself next to me on the bench and placed his gloves and mask over my phone. When he got up, while I was with my back turned, he found my phone, and during a 5 second pause which seemed to be the decision to steal it, the thief powered it off and left the center in a hurry. I was left with the only option to go the police, declare it stolen, and wait for them to check and evaluate the recordings and act accordingly. Let’s just say that I didn't have too high expectations to ever see my phone back, but this was exactly what I did, given that it was my only option. A bit to my surprise, the police acted immediately and sent an agent to check the recordings in that same evening (it was already 2-3 hours after closing time for the ski rental center). The manager cooperated completely, and long story, short, 24 hours later I was contacted by the manager of Interski center to go to the police station as they notified him that they solved the case. So, in conclusion, when I left Poiana Brasov on Monday evening I had my mobile phone back, unfortunately without a SIM card and wiped clean... Nevertheless, I had my phone within 48 hours of the theft, and all thanks to the full cooperation of the Interski center staff (especially the manager) and an unexpected light speed reaction from the Romanian police. Kudos to the police officers in Poiana Brasov - great work and a big thank you!
Plus:
+ quality gear
+ professional and friendly service
+ flexibility in hours during full season (they opened 1 hour earlier, and closed 1 hour later)
+ the ONLY ski rental center with FULL CAMERA SURVEILLANCE
+ helpful staff for all customer requirements, and even exceptional circumstances
Minus:
- really, I have none, pricewise you can probably find cheaper winter gear in Poiana Brasov. But you most certainly won't find a better located venue with top of the line facilities with this quality of both equipment and service provided.
