In September I spent several days in Manzhouli relaxing and looking about. Although you can fly there from Beijing, my trip was done in a hire car from Arongqi on the eastern border of Inner Mongolia, near QiQihaer (heilongjiang province). Approaching the city by road there is a new and unfinished attraction that takes your breath away....... It is a sculptured herd of about 50 (when finished) life size (all sizes) statues of Wooly Mammoth ... and they are so magically lifelike my grandchildren in Australia gasped when they saw the photos, saying "Wowwww ... they really exist?" Once in the city the cross-cultyral flavor of the border towns really stands out in the buildings and the signs .... and (like lots of places in China) the neon lights have to be seen to be believed. English is not big, because apparently not many of us go there, but I found the locals (especially the Chinese) very happy and friendly people. The city also has a great Memorial Park, dedicated to the Russian people who helped drive out the Japanese occupation forces.
On the way to the National Gate ther are 2 attractions that are a must for every visitor ... one is a Russian Doll Museum/display with giant statues of the famous style while next door there is n interesting Russian style building that is actually a sort of Art Museum..... there are the most fantastic paintings and murals on every wall of the 3 story building that looks like a Russian Church with it's distinctive colour and design, pointy dome structure. I think they are just replicas but incredibly copied. And then there is the Gate ... well I couldn't get inside because I am a foreigner and didn't have a visa to visit Russia ....... but the souvenir shop is almost worth the trip .. with a range of very cool and unique items for sale, from both cultures..... from gemstones to stuffed animals, and a hundred interesting other things. On the hills overlooking the lake area there are a small herd of mammoth as well ..... I think it is a highly underrated destination for Western tourists.

fantastic view and I specially recommend the park to visitors at night. as a matter of fact, i recommend the entire Manzhouli City to visitors after dust. the City comes alive entirely with every building lighted up like a fairyland. the park is very popular to locals especially. Many will be exercising and the entire park is bustling with activities. grandparents with their grandchildren all having a quality bonding time. many healthy communal activities.
you get a fantastic view of the city magnificence and a true sense of the China economic explosion. just wondering though who pays the electricity bills here in this city???

It's a very "plain Jane" location. Other then a lake, absolutely nothing to offer. In the early evening, even all the toilet are closed and locked. A few buildings there that you do not even find a single soul in it. The sunset light was beautiful, but as there is not subject for photography, other then looking at the horizon of the lake and mountain from far distance. It's good to drop by if you happen to pass by, not worth the special trip.

Large modern museum with beautifully presented exhibits
It looked pretty new so maybe it was opened after the last review. It has a two-story exhibit on the history of coal beginning with prehistoric plants and also covering other prehistoric life, we think we remember a mammoth skeleton, and exhibit on Hulun Lake that I wish I had seen before we went to the lake, and an ethnographic exhibit with dioramas of Mongolian yurt dwellers that look almost real in the pictures I took. Like so many of the places we went in China it was much more polished and to the Western aesthetic than I would have ever expected and has at least some English signage. However, while it uses multimedia, there are are no interactive exhibits I think so it might be of limited interest to children. It also has a large shop with some unusual and upscale things but we just aren't shoppers. The reason I deducted the star, besides the lack of interactivity, is that we couldn't find any way to actually get a tour of the lines anymore. However, we were not there with the driver so maybe we could have just driven over to them. We got there by bus from downtown Manzouli but I can't remember the number. Ask your hotel. The ticket taker and passengers on the bus were super nice but we somehow missed the stop on the highway or maybe they planned it for us because they had us get off past the museum and board another bus that took us back and dropped us off on the museum side of the highway near the museum. From there, it's a short walk to the museu, but, of course there's an enormous plaza to cross once you get there. That was plenty walking for me and we skipped walking around the mammoths. I was worried because we didn't see a bus stop sign but on the way back, you just go to the intersection and join the people waiting for the bus. It stops on the highway and goes straight back.

There were essentially two of these shopping streets a block from each other. They both have quite a few shops with Russian products. This one has a building with five floors of shops - six if you include the basement supermarket. There's a sort of food court on the fifth floor. The layout reminded me very much of a similar place in Kazakhstan's capital, Astana with row upon row of glass-enclosed shops. Boots and shoes, hats and gloves, clothing, toys, and various other products are available. Outside this building, along the rest of the street, are various shops mostly with Russian products - a lot like Zhongyang Jie (Central Street) in Harbin.

This is the boundary between China and Russia. Within the boundary there's a museum, a locomotive on display etc. Foreigners are not allowed entrance, strictly for Chinese tourists only. The best you can do is take some photographs at the entrance and the locomotive on display just inside the entrance. Nothing much to do apart from these.
