Botania is a botanical garden and a tropical butterfly garden, offering excursions into the world of plants. No need to fly to the tropics, tropical plants and temperatures are to be found in Botania. In the tropical section, you will be greeted by residents of the tropics: for example the sulfur-crested cockatoo Juuso and the Amazon parrots Lasse and Ilmari. Depending on the time of year tens of different species of tropical butterflies can be found soaring freely around one of the greenhouses of Botania. The butterflies can be seen in four different stages of development. Botania also has changing Exhibitions on different themes, plus a year round exhibition of butterfly and insect collections. We offer guided tours by reservation. The outdoor garden is open during opening hours and entrance is free of charge. You can picnic under the trees.
Botania is a suprise. You can "travel" through different climate areas moving from one room to another. The different temperatures of the rooms allow you to perceive your movement in a different climate. The room with the free flying butterflies is unique (but some little boy/girls could be a bit scared of it).
Botania is self-managed with people working in a voluntary way because the maintenance expences are high. There are room and materials for kids and classrooms. A little bar with candies and gadgets for helping the survival of this very good initiative.

We came to Joensuu looking for the Carelicum and decided to have a wander around the open air market that was in full swing nearby. I did a double-take when I saw this fine character keeping company with some locals taking a break. We were quite amused at it's low-key location and cheeky attitude even though we had no idea of it's story or importance.

Museum is easy to find, locates in Joensuu city center. Staff weas welcoming and friendly. This summer main exhibition was Eero and Riitta Nelimarkkas art - well worth to see. You also find Veikko Kasurinen art collection - first time public - collection was donated to museum 2013, but Kasurinens death postponned exhibition to 2015. Tickets 3-7€, mondays closed.

Joensuu Market is a very famous place usually offering a lot of interesting activities and food items. However, this time it wasn't full of like, even in the legendary Marttakahvila or Martha's cafe a lot of empty space was found. Yes, indeed we have been unlucky with a weather this summer. A small disappointment was that availability of the Carelian pies were quite limited. On the other hand availability of the Asian food was huge. Everything is truly changing even in the Joensuun Tori

Very impressive, meticulously built and greatly preserved Orthodox church in Joensuu. We visited it in February and the bright colors of the exterior matched perfectly with the blinding snow and the vibrant blue of the Finnish winter sky. Yes, it is small inside and it is more often closed than open, but it definitely deserves to be seen and visited. We loved the unique character of this cosy church.

We walked here from the Market Square along the river paths, the grounds /park area around the church is beautiful even in early Spring. There are signs up with the rules for Frisbee golf, and I imagine it is fun in the snow as well. A nice place to visit on a beautiful day.

A beautiful small beach (might be a bit crowded on a hot day). Water is clear and beach is also good for children because ithe water doesn't go very deep too soon. View is beautiful to the lake. There is a parking place near, so you can get there by car.

Нас восхищает природа Финляндии, а в этом парке мы провели почти два часа, любуясь ей. Даже не нужно далеко уезжать из города, чтобы подышать чистым, свежим воздухом.
