Not many western faces in Hitachi, so be prepared to be a minor attraction yourself! Good little zoo, great views over the Pacific.

O'Iwa-jinja is a shrine located on a mountain slope surrounded by moss-floored forest. Possessive of great natural beauty, the shrine has become popular due to its reputation as a "power spot," a phenomena of modern Japanese spirituality preoccupied with the borderlands of reality and the preternatural. Combining the mists of time and fables of history with the boundless mystery of nature, shrines in natural settings like O'Iwa-jinja are the chief beneficiaries of young people's peaked interest in their nation's sacred sites. There were lots of people at this isolated shrine, many of them younger, and some of them discussing power spots. Certainly I admit that there is something mysterious in the "sanbon-sugi", a five hundred year old, 50m tall and 8m thick cedar tree with three trunks conjoined at the base soaring up into the tree line like the giant trident of some earth-buried ancient deity. The moss I ran my hand over was soft and springy enough to sleep on. There is much to like in this shrine as it recalls us back to a nature-worshipping civilisation of the forest which existed amidst the trees and made ablutions in the streams long ago. The structures are somewhat more recent. The veranda of the honden (main shrine) has been recently refurbished and the fresh scent of hinoki cypress envelopes all who pray before it. Particular note should be paid to the shrine's impressive rōmon (main gate). Sub-shrines exist spread across the mountain.

Hitachi is a major industrial centre, and is the headquarters of the Hitachi brand and various of its group companies.
There are not that many places of interest as expected; yet the Hitachi Bypass caught my eye. What an amazing view driving along the great Pacific Ocean.
But the real (and honestly, the only) reason why I was here was this: the JR Hitachi Station.
Designed by the ingenious Kazuyo Sejima (妹島和世), who is from Ibaraki herself, the Station is beyond impressive. I can so sit here for hours and just gaze at the Pacific Ocean.

This is a great place for families. It has a lot of science based interactive demonstrations. It is particularly aimed towards children, but can be fun for adults too.

It seems kind of strange to review a beach - ocean, sand & sun.
We were there on a weekday and it wasn't very crowded.
A couple visit hints:
1) There are free (cold) showers near the parking lot entrance, if you want to avoid paying ¥300 for the hot showers at the beach station.
2) It's really hard to find the parking lot to this place - there are no signs that we saw. You go in the Hitachi port entrance, bear left immediately, and then left again and follow the road to the beach. Parking is ¥1000
Nice enough beach - I'd be happy to go back here.
