Looking for something to do around Harnosand? Hemsö Fästning is a very interesting and unusual site. It is a fully reconstructed military post that was developed in the 1950's as a cold war deterrent to attack from the east.
I rode a bike from Harnosand. It is about 30 Km each way and somewhat hilly so plan on two hours plus a short wait for the ferry to the island. There are bike paths about half the way and wide paved roads until the last 6 Km which are dirt and quite hilly. It is a good ride if you are fit and have four hours to ride. Take water.
It is also possible to drive a car or take a taxi if you don't want to ride a bike. There is ample parking available.
The base was a secret location but now there are ample signs and you will find it using your hotel map as a guide. Admission is 90 Kr and tours given in Swedish and English start every 30 minutes. Usually they are small groups of 5 or less. There are restrooms and a cafeteria.
The facility requires some walking, about a kilometer in the course of the 90 minute tour. Starting out you climb a path to the highest gun placement. There is a spectacular view of the sea and the chance to get inside the huge gun turret. Then you walk down a long ramp, past atomic bomb proof doors to the living and working quarters of as many as 300 soldiers. All attempts have been made to recreate the conditions as closely as possible to having the bunks made, equipment hanging up and cans of freeze dried rations in the kitchens. The medical center is especially detailed including a 'patient' on an operating table. The guides are young and enthusiastic and tell their story very well.

Well, I live near here so I visit Murberget whenever I have visitors from England. In the summer, especially in good weather, the outdoor section with buildings from all over this part of Sweden is fascinating. Sometimes there are guides/actors playing the part of a person who lived in that particular building, or playing a teacher in the old schoolhouse.
If it's not summer, or the weather is not co-operating, there is a large building housing the indoor museum. The permanent exhibits are beautifully presented in an atmospheric way.
The temporary exhibits are also usually interesting, but that depends a little on both the exhibits and the visitor!

Smitingen is one of the biggest and best sand Beaches around this part of Sweden. Nicely colored sand, quite long beach and a slow fall of when going into the water. Past the beach you'll find a forrest with paths you can walk. If you feel up to and walk a bit longer you can visit a place with a number of caves just alongside the sea! You'll also find greats views from several places where you can take in the Panorama of the sea as well as the beach you came from. Great place to visit when the weather is good.

Cosy car museum consisting of couple of halls with exhibition with US, former west and east Europe and so on. Worth visiting for a car enthusiast.

Technicus is a big building full of working models which explain physical effects, games, toys and other cool things. IMHO, it is a great solution of a problem: where to put technic-oriented father with children, while mother has other things to do. Though it may be interesting for mothers also! A model of an earthquake for example :) Or huge building blocks... Or fika. It is very convenient for children of different ages: the youngest may crawl around or play with toys in special area. I love it. To cut the story short, it is the same type as Tom Tits in Södertälje, but with a more homey feeling...

Rent kayak in the High Coast of Sweden. We offer new, stable kayaks from Prijion. We have single- and dubble kayaks. You can find us on Hemsön, just north of Härnösand. Call for further information. Please note that you must book a kayak in advance. We are not always in place at the rental.
My wife and I visited Sweden in September. Somewhat last minute we decided we wanted to go sea kayaking and contacted Hemsokajak. Erik was fast to respond and provided all the details necessary : how to catch the ferry, what to wear, what to pack. All this led to a smooth arrival at the dock. He was very flexible about when we arrived and was easy to contact by SMS.
Once there, he helped us bring out the kayaks and load them with our supplies (bags, food, water). All the equipment was in great condition. He supplied us with waterproof maps and off we went.
The water is beautiful and we had a great time. We made only one stop near where the lighthouse of Lungön is. However, our shoes got wet immediately and limited our explorations. We went barefoot in the kayaks after that and I definitely recommend going this route and keeping hiking shoes in the dry bags for exploration. We had lunch and drank coffee just sitting on some rocks and watching the water. It was a beautiful day and a good stopping point for us to recharge for the rest of the trip.
Once you begin coming up from the tip of Lungön you are more exposed to the Bothnian Sea so be prepared for a more physically demanding trip coming back around! It was thrilling to cut through the waves and cruise along the ocean. I saw a lot of interesting birds and foliage on my way as well. My wife decided to return the route we came through instead of going through the Bothnian Sea as the waves made her feel a little too sea sick.
I'm jealous because she had 3 seals approach her and got a front row seat to seeing their cute little faces.
We both made it back and met at the dock. We had such a great time and want to do it again. This trip was several hours long - We were out for about 8 hours, but as Erik mentioned it's about 4 hours of active paddling without breaks. We hope we can come back and do some of the multi day excursions around Hemsön. If you are thinking about kayaking around the high coast, this is the place to do it from! Can't recommend them enough.

We were visiting High Coast for a few days in June 2016 and were interested to go kayaking. Our plan was to do one or two day-trips around the area. We looked up some alternatives before our trip and found company called High Coast Experience. Their high quality selection of sea kayaks was impressive, so we decided to contact them. We agreed a preliminary plan by email beforehand which we could later adjust according to weather conditions.
On Monday morning we met Lars from High Coast Experience at our hotel. We went through the safety issues, looked at the weather reports and decided a suitable route for our first day-trip from the map. Lars offered to transport us and the kayaks to the starting point but we decided to take our own car with us. We agreed that we could leave the kayaks to a pre-agreed point after our day-trip and Lars would pick them up from there.
On Tuesday the weather wasn’t that nice, so we decided to skip that day and plan another trip for Wednesday. On Tuesday evening we again agreed a new starting point and a new plan for another day-trip. Lars then delivered the kayaks to a new location and picked them up after our trip.
The service was excellent and friendly: The booking of our trip went smoothly by email thanks to Lars’s quick replies. The gear was good quality and suitable for us. We got good and educated recommendations on routes, keeping our safety on mind. We have experience on various kayak rental services and the way which Lars took the safety issues in consideration was exceptionally impressive. He also was able to fulfill our special needs to make our trips possible.
The High Coast is impressive from the top of the hills but it’s as beautiful from the sea level. Kayaking is a great way to experience the unique landscapes, crystal clear water and sandy Beaches. There are plenty of routes for beginners and more experienced kayakers. We had two unforgettable days around the Norafjärden, thanks to Lars and the High Coast Experience.
