Handan is a prefecture-level city located in the southwestern part of Hebei province, China. It borders Xingtai on the north, and the provinces of Shanxi on the west, Henan on the south and Shandong on the east.

Located almoust exactly in the city center park Congtai is one of the favourite places for locals. There is something for everyone: walking alleys, sports facilities, ponds with fish and to top it all - ancient wall from Zhao dinasty.
I was there early in the morning and saw locals doing tai chi by the pond and gymnastics by the ancient wall - it was amazing!

Handan is not a city many tourists visit, but if you happen to go there, the city museum is well worth your time. The provincial museum in Shijiazhuang, of course, is better, but this one has some pretty good artifacts. Handan was the capital of the State of Zhao in the Warring States, and also the home of Cizhou Porcelain, so it has the best collections of those artifacts in China. Also an ancient coin gallery and a pretty good collection of Buddhist sculptures. The grottoes at Xiangtangshan are about a half hour (by taxi) west of Handan, and quite interesting in their own right. Full disclosure: I'm not a "normal" tourist. I'm a professor of Chinese history who photographs Asian museums (about 100 so far) in their entirety and makes my photos available for free on my GaryLeeTodd.com website to scholars, teachers, and anyone interested in history. So I am more enthusiastic than most people about museums. Since all museums in China, except the National in Beijing, are local in nature, you must visit every province if you want to get the history of each region. China has seriously upgraded all their museums in the last five years, so that nearly every major city with any sort of history will have a good, modern history museum, like that at Handan. The one downside is that Handan, like most of Hebei, is fairly dingy and polluted.

The grottoes date from the Northern Dynasties, c. 500 AD, and are contemporary with Longmen (early phase) and Gongyi Grottoes in Henan Province a little to the south. While Longmen is world-class and one of the greatest tourist sites in all China, Xiangtangshan is both smaller and quite off the beaten path. However, unlike the other two grottoes of the same era, a fair amount of original color remains. There are actually two grottoes: the Northern and Southern. The northern caves require a fairly stiff climb, which means it's not for the weak or infirm. Getting there can be problematic. The caves are a half hour west of Handan, and about a half hour apart. A public bus supposedly goes there, but I didn't have the time to take a chance, so I hired a taxi at the train station and negotiated one price for him to wait at the northern grotto, then take me to the southern one, and then back to the train station. It worked fine. Word of warning: take only an official taxi in the station queue. If a guy offers to take you in his private vehicle, it's a scam and you will pay a good bit more. The southern caves are smaller, but don't require a long climb. Very few foreigners seem to know about these caves, so if you've already seen the more famous ones elsewhere, this is a pretty decent, albeit challenging, adventure.

Small and comfortable hotel in Mahabaleshwar, not far from main street and market, where we bought very interesting things and local fruits at a very cheap price. It is convenient- in walk distance we arrived at train station. Room service was good.

I would recommend longhu park for people wanting something to do on either a cold winters day or a warm summers day. It works well in many different types of weather. Enjoy
