Java was one of the last parts of the Islamic world to convert to the religion. This process began in earnest in the 15th century when a few North Coast sultanates converted to the new religion, cutting off the coastal trading ports of the mountainous Hindu-Buddhist interior. Today, the overwhelming majority of Javanese are Muslim, though a few small pockets of Hindus survive, especially in the far East.
The religion was spread, according to legend, by nine holy men known collectively as 'Wali Songo'. One of these was Sunan Giri and his religious complex was situated on a forested hill outside the port of Gresik, about 40 kms from Surabaya. The mosque here is 500 years old and follows classic Javanese lines. But Sunan Giri's tomb is the real highlight. This beautiful teak tomb features wonderful, finely detailed woodwork which surpasses even the tomb of Sunan Drajad for beauty. The blissful chanting of devotees seated around the tomb was mesmerizing to listen to; I can rarely recall seeing so pure a sense of devotion. This place is one of the finest sites of Indonesian Islam; the sea views out to the Madura Strait only add to the experience.

It took us 10 hour of ship ride from Gresik to reach Bawean, i admit at first i stupidly thought it was a small island, apparently it's not. It is quite a populated island with inns available.
Bawean has great snorkeling spot, still well preserved, it has 'gosongan' named gili noko, and great sunset experience in Tanjung Gaan. Sunset in Tanjung Gaan was so special because we had to take small boats to reach there and climb the small cliff for the maximum sunset experience. One of my friend even jumped right to the ocean instead of went down by stairs.
Then we were lucky to witness the moon and stars raise in one side while twilight was still showing on the other side. What a memorable experience!

The beach is relatively close to Surabaya. Kl be a cheap holiday to this place, but for convenience is still lacking, because of lack of clean Beaches and water is also somewhat murky.

Masjid ini sangat luas. Arsitek yang indah. Berada tepat sebelah barat Alun Alun Gresik.
