Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourgish: Esch-Uelzecht pronounced [ˈæʒ‿ˈuə̯ltsəɕt], German: Esch-an-der-Alzette or Esch-an-der-Alzig, French: Esch-sur-Alzette) is a commune with town status in south-western Luxembourg. It is the country's second "city", and its second-most populous commune, with a population of 33,286 inhabitants. It lies in the south-west of the country, on the border with France and in the valley of the Alzette, which flows through the town. The town is usually referred to as just Esch; however, the full name distinguishes it from the village and commune of Esch-sur-Sûre which lies 45 kilometres (28 miles) further north. The country's capital, Luxembourg City, is roughly 15 km (9.3 mi) to the north-east.

Boasting two concert halls - the Main Hall that can accommodate an audience of up to 6500 and the Club that can hold 1200 - the Rockhal, a complex managed by the public institution Centre de Musiques Amplifiees and co-financed by the Luxembourgish State, is Luxembourg's No 1 concert venue. We were staying with our daughter in law in Esch and learned that she takes a wonderful walk up into the park each day. We went with her and found many of the trails quite beautiful and also some were pretty steep. Initially the hillside is terraced with nice landscaped picnic areas, walkways, stone walls and flowers. As you go higher you pass many private Gardens along the park edge. These Gardens include makeshift Cabanas, outdoor grills, etc. We saw folks from the village enjoying working in these Gardens. Then as you climb higher, the landscaping gives way to more rustic dirt trails and eventually you arrive at the deer park with numerous enclosures and a variety of wildlife. Lots of families were there having arrived by car rather than walking up. There is a sort of café there as well. Food is available for feeding the animals. We walked down the car access road to get back down to Esch. Passed a large soccer stadium also.

When I went to visit the animal parc on Gaalgebierg, I discovered that the animals were not well taken care of. Their fur was in a horrible state and they looked ill and malnutritioned. After having spoken to a person responsible for the animals, that one pointed to the fact that it would not be allowed to feed the animals appropriately, they would not be taken care of and the veterinary would be a complete mess and not being able to make the right diagnosis. The animals were simply left to die or chirurgical operations were being made much too late. Furthermore I was informed that there was mobbing from the side of the lady managing the park and also from the veterinary and that the atmosphere for the people working there would be hell.
Therefore I absolutely recommend to not visit this parc. An investigation will most surely take place, once the veterinary inspection has been informed.

The bar is small and cosy during winter time. On summer the Terrace is very pleasant and even if not far from the huge traffic of rue de Luxembourg, still is peaceful. Nice staff, good music not too noisy so that discussions with friends or...MoreThanks a lot for your nice review.

Spent an hour and half here following the story of the Luxembourgish resistance during World War II. Moving photos and vivid written descriptions are numerous. Many artifacts also accompany the photos and descriptions in glass cases, etc. All this in presented in a warehouse sort of décor with rough wood boards, metal staircases and balcony. The building itself is monumental and beautiful as it sits at the edge of the Place de la Resistance square.

You've got to pay champagne to the waitress in order to be accepted. The people in there are snob and nobody will talk to you.

Excellent example of how to recycle buildings. Built as a slaughterhouse but now turned into a rock club and center for cultural activities. Very cool industrial feel to the place. Perfect for club gigs with a crowd of a few hundred people.
Bar convenient located to the side of the stage in a separate room. Nice restaurant next door.

If you're in Esch-sur-Alzette and you're into church architecture, you should definitely check out this one. On a nice day, you can combine seeing the church with talking a walk through town. I definitely recommend seeing it once at least.
