The external structure and complex is lovely. However the standing display was really poor considering the collection they must have. It seems they are planning a new museum for the future and this may be why the exhibits are so limited. If so they should give warning and also reduce charges. This was our sole reason for coming to Dessau so the cost has to take in travel and accommodation not just admission charge. Disappointing.

The houses are located on a quiet tree lined road. The the stark white and glass buildings beautifully set amid lush green grass and tall trees. Inside the proportions are disorientating as you find yourself on a balcony overlooking a steep drop to below ground level and a high rise to the ceiling of the level above. There is little furniture or colour but some photographs and information about the periods they were occupied.

This Museum is located in one of the remaining buildings of the former Junkers Aircraft and Engineering plant. Hugo Junkers set out to make internal combustion engines more efficient and ended up inventing the first cheap and efficient gas water heater. Because he knew that few mothers would welcome a gas flame in the bathroom, he arranged for his heaters to be placed in public schools, where kids luxuriated in hot baths -- something they wanted at home as well. Clearly the man understood marketing. His work on aircraft was groundbreaking, and his relationship with the Bauhaus designers led to amazing prefabricated and efficient housing. There are excellent English-speaking guides available (ask for Nigel -- he's an Irish engineer), and you are free to wander and touch a wide variety of engineering objects. Plus...it's just down the street from the Bauhaus building.

If you did the trip to Dessau, this is definitely the restaurant to go to, because it is still in the beautiful Bauhaus Architecture, and the location is very nice, by the river. However, once you go inside, it's a bit disapointing. The furniture is really boring and not at all authentic. The food is OK, but not very fine dining, as you would expect.

This little park near the Waldersee neighborhood of Dessau is a perfect place to have a picnic, hear a concert, sip some coffee outside of the orangery or just take a stroll and admire the buildings and scenery. The museum is also worth a look around. Spending time here is a dream. You can even stay overnight in the gardener's house in back of the orangery or the "Schlangenhaus".

Most of the Bauhaus stuff you see these days is rather elitarian and exclusive. But Walter Gropius and his collegues were also in search of better ways of living for the masses. In those days, the houses of labourers were modest and dark and unhealthy. Bauhaus was in search of more quality of living and of more efficient (and cheaper) ways of construction.
Georg Muche and Richard Paulick designed in 1926/27 a steel house in the Südstraße in Törten. It's still there, put back in its original splendour. Hundreds of other houses suffered from a lot of alterations but over the last 15 years, bit by bit they are renovated, respecting the original design. In the 'Konsumgebäude' (Am Dreieck Street), another building by Walter Gropius, there's now a visitors center.
The quarter can easily be reached by tram but a Bauhaus bicycle tour on your own is probably the best way to discover these and other places in Dessau. For the ones that would like to stay in this Bauhaus Siedlung, I noticed the presence of 3 small b&b's in this neighbourhood.

While staying in Dessau we walked up to this museum and decided to check it out. What a find! Lots of great information on the local history of Dessau. More significant though was the Luther/Reformation materials we found down in the basement display. Numerous original documents by Luther and other writings from the Reformation period. Some really great stuff here. Sadly none of displays are translated into any other language yet, but still worth the visit.

Great example of recent German ecological architecture. Walk through the park all around the meandering building and see its colours change. Get in (free access to the glass covered courtyard), pick up one or more of the brochures about the building and ask for a headset to have your private tour! Around the main building by Sauerbruch & Hutton (Berlin) you can witness some older and reconverted buildings e.g. the Wörlitz Station. The canteen is freely accessible for the public and is another freestanding building.
