Mathildenhoehe

Reviewed By simmondsi - Darmstadt, Germany

Darmstadt is renowned for Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) and particularly the artist Exhibitions that took place around 1901. There's no better place to learn about this history than at the Mathildenhöhe. The five-fingered Hochzeitsturm (wedding tower) is iconic and that plus the Russian Chapel make great photos.

...the collection itself is awesome! Natural history in a broad variety, history about Messel, etc. etc. Really excellent and surprising to be found somewhere like in Darmstadt. The art is great, too...but the lights..oh God...terrible! The don't do the art justice, definitely not. The light and just that leads to the 4 instead of the 5 points the content would deserve...Spent almost 3 hours of a rather hot early afternoon there...
The also offer special Exhibitions regularly. Not to be missed!

This little chapel ist just beautiful inside and outside. The architecture itself is just beautiful, and you should not mod going in as there are very nice paintings and frescos inside along with a small altar. Not to be missed if you visit the Mathildenhoehe, but check for visiting times upfront.

for whatever reasons you may not want to live there, but certainly a visit to the house designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser is absolutely worth it. There is not much one needs to say about it. Even though it is outside of the normal tourist attractions, go there, have a look, and judge for yourself.

Zoo Vivarium Darmstadt

Reviewed By 101jumper - Kansas City, Missouri

The Darmstadt Zoo is located near several parks and easily accessible by the efficient public transportation system. Entry fees are reasonable. We went in December on a cold day and effectively had the zoo to ourselves. American visitors may be surprised at how close you may get to the animals who, while safe, are much closer to the viewer than US zoos. The zoo was in the midst of a major construction project which changed the usual circular walking path to more of a horseshoe - and closing some exhibits. We enjoyed watching the otters and were lucky to watch a baby monkey explore his habitat with his family. The zoo does not have many large animals, but excels in the aquatics and reptile rooms.

Herrngarten

Reviewed By gentbrugg - Moscow

The Germans did not have such an explicit cult of Gardens and parks, like the Britishs, but they know a lot about gardening art. For what the proof is Herrngarten. It has a variance of styles, and consists of several sections, each of which is attractive in its own way, as if strung on some invisible axis, which form from opposite sides of the park museum and small Prince George's palace, now turned into a so-called "House of porcelain." It adjoins the eponymous palace garden, whose rigor and ideality are very much impressive.
And, of course, the park couldn’t get rid of Goethe monument. In this trip Goethe literally haunted me. I came across traces of his visit or memorial places connected with him, beginning from Wetzlar and ending in Wiesbaden.

Park Rosenhoehe

Reviewed By gentbrugg - Moscow

In Darmstadt you'll find lovely garden and park area which starts from the "artist colony" and through Mathildenhohe leads to Rosenhoehe behind so-called Lion gate (stone stelae, crowned by figures of lions, also the work of artists from the "colony"). Rosenhoehe is so named because of the most famous and beautiful rosary of Germany located here. However, in addition to the rosary, there are here the park with redwoods (!), a garden of fruit trees, grassy lawns, summer and tea houses and even tombs of the Ducal family of Hesse-Nassau.
I had a bite at the famous restaurant "Shiraz" and therefore leisurely walk in the Park came in handy.
