We came to Cuneo from Ventimiglia, because we heard of the famous Tuesday market in the center of town. The drive up and over the Maritime Alps through the Tende pass was an experience all its own, but the reward ended up being this massive market. It is spread all over the Centro Storico - in the central square, under the galleria arches that line it, and down the pedestrian shopping Promenade. Cuneo itself is quite a pleasant and grand surprise: Beautiful old buildings line the square, and run up and down many side streets. A lot of civic pride on display here, as the buildings are well kept and clean. (Even though the city itself is 800+ years old.) The shops here are mostly unique, one-of-a-kind boutiques with interesting selections (there is a Zara now). For those looking for Cuneo's famous brand of cakes, candies and cookies, there is no shortage of sweet shops along the perimeter. The central plaza reminds many of Turin, and I would add, with a splash of Venice's St. Mark's square thrown in. I was not expecting such a grand place, on the southern plains of Piemonte.

As others have commented, Cuneo's central square is much larger than one might expect for a city of this modest size overall. It's also quite grand, with ornate old buildings surrounding it. There's a great Christmas market and light show set up here during the holidays. A massive Tuesday market that draws from all over northwestern Italy is held here. Festivals, Concerts and various celebrations are also hosted here. The train station is convenient to the square. There is quite a bit of (paid) parking, although I wouldn't call it "ample" by any means.

Just off the Via Roma, this is part of Route 1 of the Cuneo walking tours "Cuneo in your pocket". Pick this booklet up from the tourist office further down the Via Roma to find lots of architectural treasures in the town.

Limited hours open. The walk out here from the center city is very nice through parks and along shaded streets. Views out to the Mountains and possible cut-throughs to the river walks below

I didn't realise that I could visit inside but passed several times, as this is a highlight of the via Roma, marking the far end from the main square. I will have to go inside next time I revisit Cuneo.

This is a lovely church which was built 700 years ago and was sacked by Napoleon and transformed in housing for the military. Now it is part of a complex with includes Exhibitions and a museum. The building is original, architecturally pleasant and well preserved.
