Laguna di Venezia

Life on the canals of Venice can be chaotic at any time except winter when life almost ceases on the waters, Ferries excluded. To experience St. Marks Square and all the treasures nearby is not obligation, its a commandment !... Be that as it may, to get a feel of the real Venice, away from the crowds, Chioggia offers it in authentic form.
Its all here, the wharves, canals, piazzas which imbues the city with life. Parallel roads are grafted onto the Canal Vena, so its grid resembles a great fishbone. On Sunday everyone is out leisurely strolling, chatting animatedly, gossiping and crocheting, a hobby that perhaps stems from a technique used by fishermen to make nets.
The people of this town hold fast to their traditions, among them fishing remains the activity of choice , while gardening is a favourite pastime in nearby Sottomarina. We love the natural gait and ambience coupled with a rich cycle of festivities that leave you feeling inclusive and happy to be sharing this proud enclave with the locals.
Be warned... or be excited, religion plays a strong suit in their lives.
We have come to Chioggia by boat from Venice, but on a previous visit drove along the Romea Road. Deviating via a small detour, we looked at, with softning admiration at the beautiful marshy expanse of the Millecampi and Brenta Valleys.
Once in town, the Porta Garibaldi leads to the Corso del Popole, where the artistic heritage of the city is revealed. The 17th century Duomo is spectacular, as is the Piazza Vescoville. The Temple of San Martino is astonishing, considering its constructed from terra-cotta and done in a gothic-Venetian style. We were taken emotionally, when seeing the painted papier-mache Madonna with Child at the auditorium of san Nicola and the grandeur of of the 14th century Palazzo del Grangio.
There are a lot of lace shops here considering that it is not unusual to find women in Chioggia bringing out their wooden chairs onto the streets where they 'work the cotton' into what they gigglingly refer to 'gossip'.
We dined on freshly caught fish and a tasty eel dish at Restaurant Garibaldi doSottomarin, after which we took a boat trip up the Brenta River past some of the most beautiful villas of the Veneto region, the highlights being Mal Contenta and the Villa Pisani in Stra.
Loved seeing the brightly decorated fishing boats along the Ponte San Domenico as well as the shipyards for the gorgeous wooden boats. Do stop to gobble some crabs at eateries around Borgo San Giovanni. They are heavenly.

Large structure dating from the 13th century. On its own island in the north-east of the town, and worth the walk. Austere interior with some good paintings, one of them attributed to Tintoretto. Very spiritual atmosphere. Not many visitors when I was there last spring.

Bahia del Sole

Reviewed By BudgetTraveler2015 - New York

During our recent 7 night stay in Padua we decided to take the day off from sightseeing and took the bus from Padua Station to the beach at Sottomarina/Chioggia. The bus takes about an hour to get there and the round trip fare was around E10 each. Once we arrived at Sottomarina we saw a main strip with one beach club after another that extended all the way down to the jetty. We decided to spend the afternoon at Bahia del Sole, and we are very happy we did. The facilities are excellent, the beach is clean and well kept, the Adriatic Sea was beautiful and the swimming was great, the prices for lounge chairs and umbrellas was only E6 each per day, the staff was very friendly and helpful, there is a snack bar/bar at the waterfront and a full service restaurant near the entrance. We ate lunch at the main restaurant, the prices for the food and drinks were very reasonable and the quality was outstanding (the mussels were awesome!), the wait staff was very attentive and all spoke English. I highly recommend spending a relaxing day at Bahia del Sole in Sottomarina/Chioggia when visiting the Veneto region of Northern Italy.

A tidy beach with beds and umbrellas that are in very good condition. It has a big parking area, free wifi service, and a playground with tunnel slides. The sea water can be quite warm in the afternoon if the weather is nice. I like it's familiar atmosphere and cleanness. The only thing that I didn't like was the permanent market in front of the sea water.

This is a beautiful little amusement park which is very well looked after and maintained. The theming on the rides is excellent, in good condition and very colourful. The Bruco Mela Coaster was good fun and very smooth. The Extreme ride, a pendulum was smooth and comfortable with good music and airtime.
The staff are very friendly and the whole place looks really clean and well loved. The toilets are great, proper toilets and extremely clean. Some of the best amusement park toilets I have used.

Cattedrale di Chioggia

Reviewed By Thomas O - Vicenza, Italy

Nice and large Cathedral rebuilt over an older one destroyed by fire, by the famous architect Baldassare Longhena who built other churches and palaces in Venice such as the Santa Maria della Salute. Nice looking are the two chapels on each side of the main altar. Noteworthy is the Romanesque Bell Tower(64m) located outside, a bit detached from the Cathedral.
