The reproductions of historical buildings (dormitory of forestry options in early 1900s) are probably authentic. Almost all are used as shopping or eating opportunités. The Museum is very small. Worth a visit if you are not familiar with this part of Taiwan history.

The Hinoki Village

Reviewed By David B - Rayong, Thailand

Hinoki Village, near Chiaya City, was built by the Japanese when Formosa (modern day Taiwan) was a Japanese colony. The renovated and sometimes reconstructed wooden buildings are of interest to anyone into architecture and Japanese history.
But this "Old Village" is now a "Modern Tourist Rip Off".
The shops are full of tawdry tourist souvenirs and rip-off prices and the restaurants and cafes offer food and refreshments that are similarly handsomely prices.
Despite this, it seems very popular, at least on the day we visited when it was almost crowded out.

"Today" (Nov. 13th) I visited; Chiayi Park which also includes, beside the park & Chiayi Tower, also known as Sun-shooting Tower,
Chiayi Metropolitian Forest, Chiayi Arboretum & Shanzihding Botanical Garden. It also includes a Confucian Temple & a
Relics Museum which I will see later. I spent a good four hours wandering around here amongst Taiwanese walkers & I'm not done.
A myth of the Sun-shooting Tower is;
John loves botanical Gardens. He prefers flowers, conifers & evergreens. Seen here (in the photos) are an un-named evergreen,
a few tree flowers, green leaves, hoop pines (member of the Araucaria family, which I love them all) & garden views.

I have added the photo of the hours the tour runs. The guide is in English she seems to speak good English when needed but mainly the tourists are all Chinese. Good insight of the old days prisons in chiayi. The tour goods into good depth of all aspects of the prison allow at least one hour for this tour. There is no shops or drinks at this location and it is walking distance from the village only two blocks away.

Chiayi Station

Reviewed By IveeLim

Would have given chiayi train cum bus stations 5 stars if not because of the constant harassment from the old ladies who really followed you to the ticketing queue trying too hard to convince people to car pool in their taxis. The staff at the counters were professional and knowledge. After hearing our itinerary plan, they further advised us on the route and timing to meet our needs. We arrived at chiayi too early to check so whiled away the time at the cinema and McDonald a few steps away from the station

This has been one of the 8 most beautiful view of this area since the Japanese era (1895-1945). It is actually pretty big with several walking and biking trails surrounding the lake. So depends on your preference, you can be there early in the morning like the locals, walking , jogging, doing all sorts of exercise, biking, or even picnicking. Try not to go there during late afternoon though, lots of mosquitoes!
