Buxton is a spa town in Derbyshire, in the East Midlands region of England. It has the highest elevation – about 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level – of any market town in England. Close to the county boundary with Cheshire to the west and Staffordshire to the south, Buxton is described as "the gateway to the Peak District National Park". A municipal borough until 1974, Buxton was then merged with other localities lying primarily to the north, including Glossop, to form the local government district and borough of High Peak within the county of Derbyshire. Despite being in the East Midlands, economically Buxton is within the sphere of influence of Greater Manchester. The population of the town was 22,115 at the 2011 Census.

Spent a day walking the Goyt Valley. This is a beautiful and picturesque area set around the Fernilee and Errwood Reservoirs reservoirs. There are plenty of footpaths to choose from or pick up a map and do one of the circular around the reservoirs. Whether it is walking alongside the reservoirs, walking in the Forests or along the ridges this is a stunning part of Derbyshire. The place is dog friendly and the parking is free.

My husband and I recently visited the Buxton Opera House to see a show. The inside of Opera House is absolutely stunning. It is well worth a visit and the staff are lovely. Parking is a little bit of an issue though as a downside

Poole’s Cavern is the most spectacular natural cavern in the Peak District. Wonder at the amazing crystal formations which adorn the vast illuminated chambers on a one hour guided tour. Discover the home of the cave dwellers and learn about their lives in our new exhibition centre. Enjoy a tasty meal in the Cavern Café and explore the fossil and gemstone shop. Stroll through Buxton country park woodlands to the panoramic viewpoint of Solomon’s Temple.
After a good (but very icy and sloppy) walk in Buxton Country Park we went to Poole’s cavern. We weren’t sure what to expect, but the tour was very interesting and informative. A nice little find during our Buxton stay. Great dog friendly cafe too.

A stroll through Buxton Country park from Poole's Cavern leads to the summit of Grin Low at 1440' altitude and the Victorian viewing tower of Solomon's Temple.Built in 1896 the 20' tower with spiral stairs give a magnificent platform to view the surrounding Peak District landscape and the Spa town of Buxton in the valley below.
Above Pooped Cavern are some paths that lead up above Buxton providing both the opportunity to be in the countryside but spectacular views in all directions.
The Temple itself is a stone tower which is open and can be climbed to gain even better views. Just watch your footing as you go up the narrow steps inside the tower. The slopes are wide open and easy to hike up.
Close to the town but immediately in countryside.

We happened to visit this location at lunchtime on a term-time Wednesday which, as luck would have it, was one of the two days each week when students at the campus practise their catering and hospitality skills.
There were two Seating areas – a self-service, cafeteria-type arrangement, which had several main-meal options, each of which looked interesting. We both opted for a roast Turkey dinner, which (even though it was mid-March) had pretty much the full Christmas trimmings, including cranberry sauce. And very nice it was too! A particular bargain at £5-75.
The other option was a white tablecloth, waitress service area offering a 3-course meal. Again, there were several appealing options. And, again, the cost at around £11-50 or so for the full menu was a bargain. We’ll try this next time.
Certainly worth a visit – just be sure to come in term-time, on one of the days when students are practising their hospitality skills … which are clearly well-honed already!

Tremendous exhibition here when we attended, early December, by local school leavers and current pupils, you would swear the art was by established artists. This attraction is free, and shows some beautiful art. Check it out please. My wife just could not resist the Buxton bear toys at the entrance shop.

Happened upon the 'well' when sightseeing. Wasn't sure what to expect but the religious sculpture and script provided a very nice setting for the spouting water in the 'sink'. The water is warm and when I put my hands under the water, the sore on my finger was throbbing. I washed my hands under it a few hours later aswell and that night my red swollen finger tip had healed and was no longer sore. There are multi million pound plans afoot to create a spa hotel opposite and will look superb, I'll definitely pay a visit when complete.

Visiting this church on the tour bus was the highlight of our trip. We would never have come across this very old and incredibly beautiful church on our own. The building is very old and was originally a barn before it became a high church. Inside the atmosphere was amazing and not what I expected. Fantastic old stained glass windows, beams, just lovely. It was kept locked but our driver had a key but obviously if a service was in progress then we would not have gone in.

With a little imagination you can still picture steam locomotives hauling their trains over this towering structure and into the station just beyond. To walk over it today one gets to appreciate the engineering that went into building this wonderful bridge.
