Monte Brasil

Reviewed By Kirk B

We hiked to different points of Monte Brasil at different times and really enjoyed the area. The nice part about this reserve is that it's accessible in a number of ways for all folks. You could drive to the (near) top. You can walk the roads. Or you can get off road and do some path hiking.
The entrance weaves through a lovely children's park. On the Mountain itself you should doubtlessly encounter numerous deer and discover some fabulous views.
We loved this walk and suggest that anyone staying in Angra do Heroismo partake in one form or another!

As you tour Terceira you will encounter many of these beautifully decorated chapels in many of the towns. We were fortunate to see major celebrations around the Holy Spirit revered on the Island.

Pico Matias Simao Viewpoint

Reviewed By CruisersRus - Mount Albert

Pico Matias Simão is a wonderful lookout point and landmark.Interestingly, the blue, tiled sign on the corner of the building just past Raminhos, Terceira, says ‘Pico do Canada’. In Portuguese, the word 'Canada' translates as ‘Street’. Turning down this old narrow road at the sign, we found ourselves travelling between pasture and crop fields. This rustic piece of pavement takes you to a stairway leading up to this religious monument. The monument sits all by itself atop the highest peak in the area. You can easily see it from any of the main roads. One can’t help but wonder what a task this must have been! At the base of the peak there are about 75 steps carved into the earth that take you to the top. While ascending the steps some fellow in a 4x4 braved the ruts and erosion of the small gravelled roadway beside the steps and bounced his way to the top. Don’t try this with your rental! At the top you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of much of the coastline, lava rock fences, green farmlands and a back drop of Mountains. Step into the little path behind the monument (be careful - no railings at the edge) for a close up look of the cliffs and the churning ocean.

Thiago is a genuinely nice guy and runs an excellent company. My family of 3 (11 yo daughter) spent an amazing week with in Terceira and spent 4 days with ComunicAir and the very lovely and knowledgeable guide Sophie. We went on 2 walks one to Santa Barbara and one around pico Alta with visits to lava tunnels and magma chamber/ volcano.
Sophie's knowledge of the flora and fauna of the island has fuelled our daughters interest in natureback home. We also enjoyed a full day jeep tour of the island and a half day cycling experience
Thanks ComunicAir for sharing
Beautiful Terceira with us and also sharing your dislike for the invasive ginger lily!
Missing the Donna Amelia cakes Thiago!
All the best to you and your family and thanks again.

Duque da Terceira Garden

This garden is small but there are benches and pretty flowers and fish ponds to gaze at while you relax. Its free to enter and it would take less than 20 minutes to walk around. Make sure and go uphill too where the restaurant is. There's more to see up there and if you stop into the restaurant its a nice place to grab a snack, coffee or a full meal.

Igreja Matriz de Sao Sebastiao

This church has alot of character and spirituality in it and is located across the street from one of many island empires or "imperios" as the locals call them (which are the little chapels scattered around the island). It is interesting to see the ongoing restoration project of the murals on both sides of the church walls. Try to get into the empire across the street as well if it's open.

We stumbled upon this monument while walking through the Gardens. The walk up is steep but beautiful. Multiple pools with frogs and beautiful plants. Some skinks sunning themselves amongst the rocks. Very clean and safe. The views from the top are well worth the steep climb.

Rua da Se

Reviewed By travelfreak53 - Farmington, Connecticut

This beautiful little street captures all the charm of Angra. The beautiful mosaic sidewalks offer a visual treat to all. The street is flanked by cute shops and restaurants, and there are lots of opportunities to window shop or purchase a souvenir or two. The little shop with Angra memorabilia is run by the nicest lady. Her English is very limited but she certainly makes an effort to help and to communicate with everyone. While it has the typical souvenir magnets and gewgaws, there are also some very high quality products made by local artisans.
This street is the main drag that is intersected by cross streets, making Angra one of the first cities built with a grid system of streets. Take any one of the cross streets to find yourself down by the waterfront or with plenty of options for dining. Rue da Se is the hub of the historic center of Angra and worthy of lots of strolls during your stay.
