Great value safari lodge in the South Luangwa. Perfect for families, solo travellers, honeymooners and wildlife afficionados! The camp has a relaxed atmosphere, great game viewing, incredible guides, delicious food and a stunning location all at sensible prices. Stay with us at a Safari Camp that doesn't take itself too seriously but seriously takes care of you and enjoy the Luangwa Valley at its best.
Would you want to go on safari to an African country where everyone speaks English? Of course you would so Zambia is the place to go. South Luangwa National Park abuts the stunning Luangwa River in the South Eastern region of Zambia. We stayed at Flatdogs Camp and were blown away by the food (4 star and all freshly cooked daily on the premises) and wonderful staff. Everything was highly organised and nothing too much trouble. My husband and I are very serious (but amateur) wildlife photographers and we had ‘targeted’ two species in particular that this area is famous for, that is leopards and wild dogs. We were not disappointed, and of course there were all the other main contenders in abundance, from lions, elephants, hippos, giraffes, hyenas etc. We have always said the real joy is seeing true wildlife in its own environment behaving naturally; please see the zebras just having fun in a small family group. Zambia is unique in many ways, with a relatively sparse population of only 17 million, but they have 7 very different languages not dialects so they use English as their first language. It is spoken widely by virtually everybody. Thus communication between us all is excellent. The national park itself is quite different from many Africa countries as the landscape varies from open grass plans, vast areas of water bodies, known as lagoons where the hippos spend much of their day, to the forested areas where elephants and giraffes lurk. The word Flatdogs is a colloquial name for crocodiles. It is without doubt the best place we have ever stayed, anywhere, by far. We are well travelled and have been to Africa for wildlife five times before. The accommodation was very spacious and comfortable with a choice of luxury bug proof tents with private en-suite facilities to self-catering lodges. The food I have already mentioned. The owners have set extremely high standards with all aspects of service and the people running it day to day were quite delightful. Our guide for the duration ranked with the best. A very bright young man with a mind boggling mental map of the whole park and an almost encyclopaedic memory for the flora and fauna. I will not tell you his name as we want him to be available when we return!!! The park entrance is a very short five minute drive away but you see wildlife immediately you start your journey from Flatdogs. The staff were always happy to engage and so good to have meaningful conversations with everyone. The local beer was good too! We will return!!

The central building and individual private suites are designed to let nature play a leading role in ensuring the relaxed pace and magical experiences are enjoyed by guests.
Our trip to the Royal Zambezi was by far the most fantastic experience of our lives. To start with, our room (the Royal suite) was impeccable: beautifully clean, tastefully decorated, and superb attention to detail including a cold water flask by the bed, luxurious toiletries, turn down service and even our own reusable bottle to take home as a souvenir. We felt that everything was thought of and our needs or desires were catered for at every level - thank you so much to Sam the lovely staff member who did such a fantastic job at this! He surprised us with preparing a luxurious, romantic bubble bath for myself and my partner in our outdoor bathtub on our final night, which was the cherry on top of this perfect holiday. Our activities were outstanding, and this is all thanks to our wonderful guides Mainza, Forbs and Joe. We absolutely loved our ‘Ferrari Safari’ with Mainza who would ensure we quickly got to certain spots to catch a glimpse of some exciting animals. On our first afternoon, we watched the largest pack of wild dogs in Africa for hours. On our second day, we saw 4 lion, and our third day we saw two leopards. Other animals included many elephants, hippo, Buffalo, kudu, crocodiles, impala, a genet and a civet. Mainza and Forbs were hugely informed and knowledgeable about the wildlife which ensured that we learned a lot and felt very safe, what a life changing experience!! We also went canoeing with Joe, who made me feel very secure and safe as I had felt a bit nervous beforehand. We had a beautiful, tranquil experience on the river and I will never forget that activity. We spent a morning fishing with Forbs who helped us catch 4 large tiger fish - thank you Forbs for the most awesome fishing trip! He was excellent at directing us and also teaching us about the river. The food and beverage service at Royal was second-to-none. Each meal was unique and delicious, beautifully presented and served with smiles and professionalism. I was hugely grateful that the staff catered to my food intolerances and made an effort to accommodate for me at all times. On our final evening at dinner, some staff members performed some beautiful singing and dance for us. This felt authentic as the guys were all happy and smiling, showing how much they love their job and their Zambian culture, which was a definite highlight for me on this trip. Final thanks to Natalie, Mwaka and Richard for their superb hosting and running such a flawless operation. We could not fault a single part of our entire trip and we will be returning as often as we can manage. This was a dream come true for us. All our love from Scotland - Beth and Hamish xx.

In a remote corner of the southern section of The South Luangwa National Park lies The Bushcamp Company's Kapamba, a camp that combines the isolation and superb game-viewing opportunities of a true bushcamp with a touch of luxury. Enjoy a sundowner on the riverside deck or sink into your own private plunge pool as the wildlife ambles past. Camp can accommodate up to eight guests in four spacious thatched chalets and offers guided walking safaris, plus day and night game drives (open from May to January).
Set in a beautiful location right on the Kapamba river, this authentic bush camp is a little gem. The rooms are very comfortable , well equipped, spacious and airy and with only 4 well spaced chalets, it is very calm, peaceful and relaxing. The camp is run very efficiently by Jacob and all the staff are very friendly and provide excellent service. The food is fresh, plentiful and very good quality, tasty meals. We did a mix of activities - varied game drives and walking safaris and had some unique experiences of crossing a shallow river on foot and sundowners in some wonderful locations. The landscape is varied and the game plentiful and varied, including a high population of leopards.

Simply put, we had an amazing experience. Customer service exceeded all expectations( and we had high ones). Our guide Mr. Manda was extremely knowledgeable, very warm and kind, and very patient. We learned so much. All the stuff were very professional, courteous, paid attention to us, and they still put safety first. Accommodation was excellent. Food was great.

Dotted along the forested riverbanks, Time + Tide Chongwe Camp is surrounded by wild beauty. Set at the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi Rivers against a stunning mountainous backdrop, the area is a haven for wildlife. Sit in front of your tent, beneath ancient winterthorn trees and watch as elephants feed on seed pods as the belly laugh of hippos echoes across the river. Overhead, monkeys and birds bring the canopy to life, and impalas tiptoe past, nibbling on the grassy banks. Throughout Time + Tide Chongwe Camp, the spirit of the Lower Zambezi imbues every detail. Wood artfully gnarled by nature adorns the camp, collected from fallen trees and repurposed into handcrafted furniture. Explore this breath-taking landscape with an impressive selection of activities. Track wildlife on foot with a walking safari, relax beside lions on a game drive, sleepout under the stars high in the escarpment or take to the maze of rivers and channels for canoeing, boating and fishing adventures.
We were in Zambia for 11 days. We stayed at Chongwe for the first 4 of those days. I had a sneaking suspicion that our other 2 locations would pale in comparison to Chongwe Camp, and I was right! Although we enjoyed our entire trip, there was something special about Chongwe: the views and the people. Our host told us that their main objective is to make their visitors feel like we are one of them; they hit their objective on the very first night! From the guides, who lovingly shared their wealth of information on each and every game drive, to the chefs and servers who cared for and anticipated our every need, to the cleaners and watchmen, who protected us on our way home each night, and lovingly cleaned our tents, complete each day with a new floral and towel arrangement on our beds...this crew went above and beyond in making us feel welcomed and truly at ease. As for the nature surrounding this camp on all sides, it couldn't have been better: the Chongwe river borders every single tent, so each tent wakes to a 280 degree view of its banks, complete with elephants and hippos. Each night, we could hear the baboons, elephants, lions and hyenas calling to one another. My favorite was to hear "Fat Albert," their resident hippo munching grass around my tent at night - strangely soothing! All-in-all, I can't wait to go back again. This was a special place, with very special people.

Another wonderful, unique camp from the Bushcamp Company. Run by the great host, Alex with her super friendly and efficient team, we had such a fun , enjoyable couple of days at Bili. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable, with lots of beautiful locally sourced wood used for the floors and furniture, and a great outdoor shower as well as an indoor shower. The food was very fresh and tasty , with breakfast served by the river and brunch and dinner served in various locations by the lagoon. We had the legendary, so knowledgable Manda as our guide and had some great game drives and walks , with some particularly special leopard sightings. We will definitely go back to stay at Bili again!
