13 guests room and restaurant, salon(cafe&bar) Each room has a private Onsen(hot spring). 5min drive to Yufuin station
We stayed at the Ryokan almost three months ago. And I still did not write a review. We stayed there almost by accident, as the Ryokan we intended to stay in had only a vacancy for one night. There was time pressure. So I accepted their suggestion of their colleagues. Maybe I would not have picked it if I had looked into it better as I prefer a traditional house and here the old house (badly damaged by an earthquake) has been erased and replaced with daring new architecture. Yet is turned out to be the best place of our trip, one of the best places I stayed in, and I have been in many places all over Japan. How to write a review that does justice to this special place ? A place that has all the old fashioned refinery, mastering the tradition of omotenashi, blending it perfectly with a young vibrant savoir-vivre, global art and gastronomy. |I cannot write a review. Please read all the other ones, I only want to say : thank you, arigato gozaimasu ありがとうございます

The night before we stayed at a traditional ryokan in Aso (Shinwaen) so this might have affected our judgment but the lack of service in comparison made it a disappointing stay. We arrived early having walked about 12 minutes from the station and were told we could not check in until 3pm which was fine, so we left our luggage and walked back into town. We returned a few hours later but were told we couldn't check in until we had paid in full IN CASH for the night's stay upfront. Luckily we just had enough money to do this or we'd have had to have walked back into town to the nearest ATM at 7/11. Why do so few places take credit cards in Japan? This ryokan is modern. It had the air of a university halls of residence. Spotlessly clean but rather sterile and clinical. The room was quite large and had a washbasin but for anything else it was a walk along the corridor or downstairs to the onsen. No service. You have to make your own beds up. Breakfast was minimal and self-service again. Coffee/tea, some bread and boiled eggs were laid out in a room with a nice view of the mountain and countryside. There was no dinner option so you need to walk into town again. We felt it had a lot of potential if additional service was offered but it was expensive for what we received especially compared to our previous night's stay.

<Excellent> Cuisine I think this is one of the best Japanese cuisine “ryokan (auberge)” in “Yufuin” town. During dinner in a private room, a handwritten "course menu" paper of staying date was placed on the table. A total of 11 course meals were offered in a reasonable time according to our speed of the meal. Each one was a delicate and wonderful dish. I think this cuisine deserves Michelin stars. <Good> Location Located near the center of Yufuin town, it is very convenient for sightseeing. You will arrive within a minute walk to the souvenir shopping street. <Passing> Cramped and cheap rooms The site area of the entire inn are not large because it is located in center of the town. Each room and open-air bath are somewhat small for the price. A famous designer in Japan is working on the guest room design and interior, but the used building materials are cheap, so I can't feel design goodness. <Failing> Cost effectiveness I stayed in most expensive special room and paid 1,000 USD with half board. But the narrowness and comfort of the rooms are not worth it. In my intuition, reasonable price is 700-800 USD for this room. The cost effectiveness is not good, but I might make a reservation again next year only to taste cuisine. というわけで、マイナス点もありますが、プラス面の方が遥かに凌駕している宿ではないかと感じられました。

We stayed in the spacious and beautiful Fuki - good for 5-6 pax. There is a private onsen, private garden viewed from the large glass windows. Immaculately clean, you just can't find fault with. The 10-12 course Dinner and breakfast were delightfully yummy and of the best quality, service tip-top, we were simply blown away! Here, you truly live like a king and treated like one. Quality and authentic premium Jap living and eating ! The best I had experienced! Is pricey but definitely worthy!

The three of us (including Mrs. KI-NRT and her mother) spent the final 2 nights of our Kyushu sojourn at in Yufuin, and through extensive research we settled on Sanso Murata, which appeared to be the most unique and luxurious ryokan in the area. We also chose two rooms that were adjacent to one another - "Sou" and "Hou," due not just for their proximity, but because their design aesthetic was most appealing to us (choose carefully, because each of the 12 rooms have their own unique characteristics, and because guests staying there have the option of having dinner served in their rooms. They appeared to be the most modern and Western in decor and furnishings compared to some of the other rooms, which were more traditional Japanese in look and feel. The property sits up on a small hill above Yufuin's main area (about a 5 minute drive away), which is a plus or minus, depending on what you're looking for. Given that we had our own vehicle and parking space in Yufuin is rather abundant, we felt that it was worth staying in a secluded spot when we weren't out on the town. The ryokan itself is surrounded by various galleries and a few cafes, although it was in a very sleepy part of Yufuin and was devoid of many tourists. This included several that were owned and/or operated by Sanso Murata itself, including Allegro and a Soba noodle restaurant, both that are within a short walking distance from the ryokan entrance. Both the property grounds as well as the immediate vicinity is not particularly picturesque. It's a serene and calming place, but it's neither immaculately manicured nor does it have much character. Rather than exuding luxury in an awe-inspiring way, Sanso Murata makes up for it in its indoor charms. It's neither traditional Japanese nor is it ultra modern, but somewhere in between. However, it does not feel outdated, because it's well maintained and the decor is more by design than a function of its age. Both the "Hou" and "Sou" rooms were generously proportioned (155m² and 130m², respectively), and were Maisonette-style, with the bedroom (with two Western style beds as well as one of the two toilets) on the upper floor and the Western living/dining room, a separate Japanese tatami room and the main bathroom, shower room and Onsen bath all on the ground floor. It was tastefully decorated, and with the option to spend time in either the Japanese or Western living rooms, it offers something for everyone's tastes. The Western living room furnishings don't scream "high end," but was functional and more than served its purpose. The Onsen (natural hot springs) bath in the room is of the semi open-air variety in that it's technically indoors, but you can slide open the glass doors if you choose to be exposed (somewhat) to the elements. This was a nice option to have, because it was relatively warm when we were there, so it was good have a a breeze flow in from the outside while enjoying the Onsen. So far, so... decent, right? The key to Sanso Murata lies in its exceptional service and gourmet dining experience. Even compared to most of the top luxury ryokans in Japan, this place emphasizes the "Omotenashi" service ethos to a very high degree. Upon first arrival to the ryokan, not one.. but three staff members rushed out to greet us, take our keys, grab our luggage and whisk us away to the comfortable lounge area. The next day, as we returned from a day of sightseeing in pouring rain, three more people immediately came out with umbrellas in hand, and made sure we stayed dry until we got indoors, while another staff member went and parked our vehicle. This was just one of many examples of not only great service, but an indicator of the high staff-to-guest ratio at Sanso Murata. Even in the best ryokans that serve meals in one's own room, it's typical to have one butler handle two guest rooms. Not here... Aika Goto (and her trainee sidekick Aki Nagashima) was there to serve us, and only us; not only for dinner, but also breakfast. There's no rotating servers at Sanso Murata, which is especially nice when staying for more than one night. It's easier to build a rapport with your butler, not to mention they have a better sense of your preferences and tendencies. In any case, both ladies were incredibly enthusiastic, charming and professional, and really did their homework.... Aika was meticulous in explaining intricate details of each and every course offering, which was very much appreciated - the dinners were unique and memorable, and we wanted to know all about the cooking methods, ingredients and the backstory of where everything came from and how they were raised. Everything from the subtle yet complex flavors of the clear soup (there's something secret in the dashi here, I must say) to the incredible marinated Oita Wagyu Beef was a celebration in all that's great about Kaiseki cuisine. If you're a foodie, this is definitely a place that will delight! Sanso Murata is not as Instagrammable as some other well known ryokans, but the sum of its parts adds up to it being a Top 10 property in Japan as judged by experts as well as word of mouth in the country. After our experience here, we cannot agree more.

We had an excellent stay for our honeymoon with a private onsen in our room. It is located in a secluded area, away from the crowded Yufuin town full of tourists. Highly recommended for those who enjoy a peaceful place away from town. It includes sumptuous breakfast and dinner, less hassle from looking around for meals. Each room comes with own individual wifi.

I went there at the end of 2018. The hotel is in a remote location and the road is narrow. It is very difficult for me to drive by myself. When I checked in, I found that there were Chinese receptionist standing at the front desk. Which make me feel good, to meet a Chinese people outside home town, after check in I went foe dinner, the potion are very little, you didn't feel eating after the meal has finished, then I go to the restaurant in the city for dinner again, I booked a superior room with an independent hot spring suite. I checked out at 11:00 the next morning. When I came out, I saw that the lobby was full of towels and sheets. The previous Chinese receptionist had a black face. We left. At that time, she just pretended to be busy and watched us pass by, but she didn't send us off. I didn't know it was too late to check out at eleven o'clock. All these made me feel completely different about Japanese hotels n culture, and I will never visit them again.

Wonderful resort, very friendly, courteous and efficient service! The room is very clean, designed like a traditional Japanese home. Hence, don't expect it to be a modern gadget stuffed hotel. It gives you a feeling of getaway from the electronic world we live in. It has 2 onsen, one indoor and the other outdoor! Both spacious enough 2 adults to relax at a full stretch. We bought a half board package which came with a dinner. Like any other hotel with dinner packages, we expected it to be nothing special. We were pleasantly surprised! It was one of the BEST Japanese meals I had during this visit! I lost count of the courses as the scrumptiously and beautifully plated dishes of extremely good produce came one after the other. We also ordered a local 'Yufuin No Mori' sakae which was really good. Special mention needs to be made to the staff at the resort who are a real credit to the overall experience of the resort. Always smiling and very very helpful! Thank you so much for a lovely stay. We will surely be back.
