We passed by this restaurant during our canal boat cruise. The end of the cruise is actually just a few minutes walk back to the restaurant. Our friend told us that this restaurant is 300 years old, and it made Yanagawa's Unagi no Seiro Mushi dish famous! The menu is quite simple. Basically, the steamed eel dish is all there is on the menu. And it did not disappoint. Just the aroma of the dish alone made our mouths water. We loved the sauce they used for the dish - we found it perfectly balanced with the eel. Needless to say, we diligently polished off our food to the last grain of rice.

This restaurant is very big and many diners may eat delicious eel dishes at the same time. One of popular eel dishes is “Unagi no seiromushi”, steamed rice mixed with eel kabayaki and dense sauce in a steamer. You can enjoy its nice flavors of the Spitchcocked eel and the sauce. This restaurant was designed to look like an old Japanese house and has a gift shop. You can enjoy Japanese atmosphere, traditional Japanese meals and shopping. It may be very convenient for people who don’t have enough time to enjoy Yanagawa.

You can buy the Yanagawa and Dazaifu package with meal from Nishtetsu Station. With the meal coupon, you may choose one of the participating restaurants to have your lunch. Wakamatsuya is one of the participating restaurants. Judging by the queue, I think Wakamatsuya is certainly attracting both local and foreign visitors. You must be prepared to wait. At the end of the day, it is really worth the wait as the unagi rice is one of the best I have ever tasted. It was steamed in a wooden box with a fragrant sauce. Well. You have not come to Yanagawa if you have not tasted it.

柳川の国道沿いにあるマクドナルドです。既に食事は済んだので、珈琲のみ購入の利用です。ドライブスルーがあるので利用しました。わざわざ車から降りなくて良いので便利です。

The eel rice in Yanagawa is legendary and so is this restaurant. Was sceptical about eating eel which I had never tasted before but the dish is so beautifully prepared and the experience of eating it sitting on the floor is incomparable. Do try this after your river boat ride!

We detoured to Yanagawa en route from Kagoshima to Fukuoka, specially to try this famous steamed/grilled unagi dish. Saray Fukutyu was a perfect choice. Not only was the fish done to perfection, the unagi sauce infused rice was very yummy too. The lovely ambience here, coupled with good services made the dining experience complete.
