We went there after climbing up Yamadera. The portions re massive and both the cold and the warm soba are very tasty. We had the Tempura soba and the Tempura for the cold soba came on the side.
The service is very friendly and the food comes very quickly.
The taste is like you would expect from a very good soba place and I can recommend it to everyone who fancies a nice lunch after getting some exercise done.

We are tonkatsu fans, and since we can make it ourselves, we are really fussy. This restaurant serves better tonkatsu than we could ever think of making. The owner has his own farm. We ate here twice and the second time was as good as the first.
There was a roast cutlet special for 1300 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the restaurant, and this was good, but there was a fatty side of the cutlet included. We also ate the hire katsu (filet) for 1800 yen and this was worth the extra price if it's in your budget. Definitely I would opt for filet, even if the cheaper version. The rest of the meal is the same for all choices, but if you add 200 yen, you can get tonjiru. Otherwise misoshiru comes.
Note that the non-sweet version of the sauce has a strong mustard flavor, and the regular version is quite sweet. There are little packets of mustard and also soy sauce so you can get the sauce mix you like.
If you order a meal, you get a cheaper price for drinks.
Staff is very nice. And you can't miss this restaurant. As you leave the wicket at the station, turn right toward the Metropolitan Hotel entrance and the restaurant will be your immediate right.

Restaurant Mogamitei is the Japanese restaurant in the Yamagata Metropolitan Hotel. We stayed there for two nights and had dinner at Mogamitei both evenings. First night we enjoyed their Shabu-Shabu, the beef was local Yamagata beef. The food was beautifully presented. It came with several small appetizers, nicely plated in beautiful Japanese ceramic dishes. The Yamagata beef was outstanding. They served local udon to boil in the broth at the end, some of the best udon we have ever eaten!
The second night we ordered a meal where you broil the beef yourself. It also came with a selection of small appetizers. Again a delicious dinner beautifully presented. In spite of the language problems the service was outstanding too!

There's English menu here. But it's more fun to order from the Japanese menu with lots of photos. If you don't want to pick by dishes, there are courses available, such as the Yamagata Beef Steak set. The Yamagata Specialty set was also interesting and allows you to get a taste of local Yamagata cuisines. The pork skewer with tomato was unforgettable. The Umeshu was also good.

Fantastic place to eat. All of the food was really good and the whole experience, from climbing through the tiny door to the moment we left was brilliant.
In the middle of eating our stew we were handed a "straw hat" which is used for a dance. The Hanegasa dance (or flower hat dance) is performed in the street in the summer. Two of the waitresses led the dance which diners would copy. Fun!
The service was great and I would love to visit again.
