A unique culinary experience in the pleasant village of Shinfield, just outside Reading, Michelin starred L'Ortolan is wonderfully appointed, a complement to the impressive historic house which it calls home. Surrounded by beautiful grounds and serving fo
We had a very long and leisurely lunch here, arriving before our alloted time in order to have a cocktail in the conservatory. Great cocktails, and loved the luxurious and refined decor in the conservatory along with the pre-lunch nibbles provided. We were then shown to our table in the dining room, right by the window, which was lovely, though it did get rather warm in the sunshine - I had to swap seats with my husband half way through the meal as he was getting hot!We had the 3 course lunch menu, and the staff were very aware of my allergy. All the food was beautiful, both in taste and presentation. Hubby upgraded from the set menu on pretty much every course, including the cheese course, and we had a bottle of wine with lunch. We finished off with a further drink in the bar. A lovely and refined atmosphere throughout, only spoiled a little by the tables being so close to each other - we had a couple sat next to us who were rather unpleasant in their assessment of the food, the drinks, the prices and were very show-offy and loud - at times it felt like they were sat on our table. In the end we decided not to have dessert at the table, instead opting for a final drink in the bar.Because we upgraded lots, plus cocktails, bottle of wine etc, total bill came to £240, but was worth every penny.Had the tables been better spaced out, this certainly would have been a 5*.Dear @bikergirl,Thank you! We absolutely love and appreciate all the feedback we receive from our guests - especially the highly detailed one. Glad to hear you enjoyed the entirety of your experience - from aperitif in the bar, through Cheese trolley introduction. Our Restaurant General Manager has been made aware of the comment regarding the spacing of our tables and we will look into that.We look forward to welcoming you to L'Ortolan in the nearest future.

We'd been here before and I don't think anything much changed since our last visit but I enjoyed the food much more than the previous visit.I had the prawns starter with tuna salad niscose for my main, both were very tasty. This place could do with some draft beers, the bottled French fizzy lager was ok but at over £3.50 for a junior bottle it's a complete rip of in my view.

Invited to Sunday Lunch to the French Horn, by friends, we were NOT disappointed. This establishment is old, cosy, quirky and individualistic. From arrival, we were welcomed with warmth and sincerity and allowed to 'go at our own pace', making for a very relaxed ocassion. Pre-lunch drinks were served on the beautiful terrace with stunning views of the river and surrounding colourful garden and rural environment beyond.......under 'no pressure', we eventually wandered back into the main property to be led to our table - beautifully laid - traditional dining style.Lunch was plentiful and delicious - the 'house special' duck (roasted over an open-fire in the bar/lounge area - for all to see/smell) was succulent and extremely tasty.Despite arriving shortly after 12.30pm we didn't leave until after 4.00pm - not because service was slow but because we were relaxed and contended and felt no need to move!! In fact, service was attentive and unobtrusive therefore conversation was allowed to continually flow.Given the busyness of the restaurant, I would recommend pre-booking at any time - to avoid disappointment and to enable you to enjoy the pleasures that this uniquely different restaurant offers.

Called in on a Monday lunch time without an appointment - We were pleasantly greeted and given a seat - Service good and food also in a good atmosphere at a reasonable lunch time price - fish and chips ok but haddock should have had a bit more taste - still high standards though

We had booked a booth at the back on a busy Saturday evening, and were glad we had since the restaurant was jam-packed and pretty noisy. The shared entrée carpaccio of tuna was outstanding, I followed with half a chicken, which was certainly good and copious, but less interesting, as was the creamed spinnach. Three of us ate for less than £140, including gratuity and drinks.Would recommend booking, and getting there early especially over the weekend.
