Casa del Vino della Vallagarina

Reasons for choosing this hotel This hotel, among others, was recommended to us by a local winegrower who we had planned to visit. The criteria that determined our choice were:- Gorgeous village location, well away from the busy shores of Lake Garda- Reputable restaurant- Oenotheque (wine library) to promote wines that are primarily produced in La Vallagarina, the most important wine area in the province of Trento.- Reading selected online reviews- Excellent value for moneyThe hotelCasa Del Vino della Vallagarina is housed in the stunning 'Palazzo de Probizer', on the Piazza San Vincenzo, in Isera, Trentino. It is presently managed by an association of 33 winegrowers, whose main aim is to promote their wines. It has only a few rooms, all named after a grape variety. Our roomWe were allocated room 'Marzemino' (a red Italian wine grape that is grown around Isera), a de luxe suite situated on the second floor, accessible by lift (elevator) and stairsThis well appointed suite, nicely decorated, features a large comfortable bed, stylish furniture, most probably made in the area. The purple curtains may no appeal to all guests, but they serve the purpose intended, especially in the heat of the summer, at the time of our visit. Both arched windows command a breathtaking view over the beautiful Vallagarina. The bathroomAlthough functional and adequate, the bathroom, a relic of a bygone era, never failed to challenge our eyes. It is indeed in need of modernization. The bathroom fan can be quite musical! When on a short visit abroad, we travel light and tend to rely on complimentary toiletries. Therefore, we were somewhat disappointed that our bathroom offered a 3 (body wash, shampoo, conditioner) in 1 dispenser affixed to the inside wall of the shower cubicle. No bath gel, no body lotion. So, for 4 days, it felt a little like showering at our gym!Suggestion If you do not entirely subscribe to the policy of the 'greens', bring your own toiletries. The hotel-in room safeHaving carefully read, several times, the method of operation provided, we came sadly to the conclusion that the hotel-in room safe was not working, We reported this problem to the hotel staff on 2 separate occasions, but to no avail.Suggestion Immediately on arrival in the room, check if the safe is working. If it is not, please do not wait for someone to come to help, but immediately return to the reception, and do not stand any nonsense!Free Wifi with free frustrationsWe have no smart phones, and this surely testifies that we are not over-reliant on Wifi. However, like any other guests in residence at the hotel we expected to be able to connect our tablets to the internet. The receptionist, when asked about Wifi, replied with a big smile that Wifi was free. It did not take us very long to find out that the hotel's Wifi facility was either extremely slow, or not working at all. We tried, time and time again, from the hotel's reception, restaurant and breakfast room, but never managed once to connect to the internet. 4 days without internet in Italy, is like 4 days without sunshine!Of course, we spoke to the hotel staff and manager about this unacceptable situation. The only apology we received for our ordeal was a melodramatic, 'melo operatic' : "Mamma Mia, we must do something about this"!Suggestion Travelers not owning smartphones, would be wise, before booking a room, or going there for a meal, to speak to the management. If they have not changed this antediluvian Wifi system, give this establishment a miss. The garageThe hotel has a few reserved parking spaces in a multistory car park, located about 400 yards away. It is easy to find it that is if you have a good understanding of Italian delivered at full speed. The garage is relatively safe, as it is not opened to unauthorized persons at night.Suggestion Ensure to unload the car as close as possible of the hotel's entrance door, then drive down the road for about 400 yards, and turn right into the multistory car park. When inside the car park, immediately turn left and then proceed to the first floor. To reach the hotel, walk to the end of the garage, and take the lift (elevator), or stairs, to the first level. From there, you will see the hotel about 100 yards away. Not very convenient if you have to carry luggage, and not practical at all to those with walking issues.Restaurant and foodThe hotel features a large restaurant that offers a seamless dining experience. It has also an imposing terrasse, with its incomparable open-air setting over looking the majestic Lagarina Valley. On the days of our visit, the terrasse was very vibrant with quite a few local families, including small children, all enjoying Italian specialities. On both restaurant and terrasse, tables are on the small size to maximise seating capacity. The wines on offer - Very pleasing surprise! For many years, the wines of this area were not particularly exciting. Today, a new vanguard of local winemakers are making strides, and producing compelling wines in a wide range of styles. It is most pleasing to note that that this wine region of Italy is slowly but surely coming into play. All the wines that we were recommended for tasting were excellent and did pair well with our food. As yet, these wines cannot quite compete with the stalwarts crus from Tuscany and Piedmont , but they are knocking on the door, and offering much better value for money.BreakfastBreakfast is served everyday in a nicely decorated room, located on the first floor, only accessible by stairs. Access may present difficulty to those with walking difficulty. Each table has a name, that is the name of the room occupied by guests. The main offerings such as: 'charcuterie (cooked meat), bread, croissants, butter, yogurt and cold milk are readily available on the table. Choice of juices, cereals, fruit, pastries, various types of coffee are obtainable from the buffet. The member of staff on duty, on request, will serve guests, cafe latte, cappuccino, breakfast tea, etc.Suggestion To ask whether the hotel offers room serviceSwiss clock serviceWe experienced a faultless and most consistent service. Although the restaurant and terrasse were practically full on our visits, senior and junior waiters remained cool under pressure and demonstrated a remarkable ability to anticipate customers' needs, All these guys knew exactly what they had to do and what was expected from them. They all supported each other. That was very nice for us to see.Communication and signagesWe fully subscribe to the idea that when visiting Italy, try to speak Italian! The hotel has a few staff who can converse in a foreign language, but it is not the case of all employees. Communication on arrival may present some difficulties. In order to overcome this communication problem, the hotel should produce a small flyer written in languages other than Italian, containing important information such as: direction to the garage, restaurant opening hours, Wifi, where breakfast is served, wine library operation, etcOn our first morning, it took us about 10 minutes to find the room where breakfast was served, as there was no one to ask, and no signages to guide us.HospitalityOn the whole, throughout our stay, we were extremely well looked after. Luca Bini, Casa Del Vino della Vallagarina's Ambassador and General Manager, was immensely helpful. Here is a polyglot, who has held top jobs abroad, and who knows deep down what the word 'hospitality' means. In passing, it is worth mentioning the special bubbly glass that Luca designed to promote perlage, and raise the organic and olfactory properties of sparkling wines, especially Trento Doc wines.Luca- We are grateful for all your recommendations on local wines and various grappas. They were all winners! To you and all your staff, we say :" Grazie Mille"!ConclusionThe most important and pertinent question: Would we return to Hotel Casa Del Vino della Vallagarina ?Having stayed there for 4 days and 3 nights, and bearing in mind all the remarks made throughout this review, my wife and I would definitely welcome the opportunity of returning to this most charming little hotel. Cheers!Swiss Visitors, August 2016

Best cup of coffee I’ve had in Italy thus far. Creamy and round. Reminds me of the coffee I’ve had in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. Will be back!
