Gorizia [ɡoˈrittsja]  listen (help·info) (Slovene: Gorica, colloquially stara Gorica 'old Gorizia', German: Görz, Friulian: Guriza) is a town and comune in northeastern Italy, in the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is located at the foot of the Julian Alps, bordering Slovenia. It is the capital of the Province of Gorizia and a local center of tourism, industry, and commerce. Since 1947, a twin town of Nova Gorica has developed on the other side of the modern-day Italian–Slovenian border. The entire region was subject to territorial dispute between Italy and Yugoslavia after World War II: after the new boundaries were established in 1947 and the old town was left to Italy, Nova Gorica was built on the Yugoslav side. Taken together, the two towns constitute a conurbation, which also includes the Slovenian municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba. Since May 2011, these three towns are joined in a common trans-border metropolitan zone, administered by a joint administration board.

Al Cantuccio is a shining light among the bars and restaurants of Gorizia. The restaurant/bar/café has an extensive selection of the absolute cream of the local Collio/Goriška Brda wines – around 40 by the glass, including white, red and macerated ‘orange’ wines – as well as locally and internationally-sourced cheeses, meats, fish and Union and Laško beers from neighbouring Slovenia. For wine lovers, here is a (not by any means complete) list of what is on offer:Terpin (don’t miss this one), Picech, Čotar, Nando, Klinec, Zidarich, Dario Prinčič, Damijan Podversic, Fiegel, Masut Da Rive, Gigante, Renčel, Tavčar, Antico Broilo, Stegovec, Montemaggio, Due Terre, Toros, Fon, Castello di Rubbia, and countless other small producers from the region. If you have never tried macerated ‘orange’ wines, including the Terpin I mentioned above, this would be a good chance. Most of the wines are natural or biological, and all are brought in straight from the producers just a few kilometers away. The wine of the region is supposed to go well with the local Pršut (prosciutto) ham, and indeed it does. A glass of house white or red starts at one Euro fifty, going up to five or six Euros for the finest of the selection. I think that the quality to price ratio here is excellent, and I have not found wines of this standard on offer at these prices anywhere else in Italy or Slovenia. As regards the food, the cheeses are from Latteria di Fagagna and elsewhere in Italy, France, and England, while the ham is imported direct from Slovenia and from Toscana in Italy. There is also wild sockeye salmon, which is truly delicious as served with a little pepper and salt, Spanish anchovies, oysters, and all sorts of other delicacies to pair with the large range of wine. Lots of groups seem to order a big platter of cheese and meat at all hours of the evening, and I can testify that they are fantastic. I cannot speak highly enough of this restaurant/bar/café, and would recommend it as an absolute must for every visitor to Gorizia. Five stars all round!

Atmosfere La Stua

We visited this bar twice in the last week and we couldn't find the wine that we asked. The manager tried to sell us his wine even though we didn't wanted. After three bottles of wine we still had the same glasses and all the pitchers on the table and we felt treated like we just have to bring money in. The costumer service was better from the employees then from the manager. Because we hope in better and we consider this review helpful for the staff we will try for the last time to consume in this bar, hopefully in a better and politest way. Cordiali saluti

My latest visit was a disappointmentn, for the very first time. I have heard a bit about the background related to the past year plus, so I believe it is a transient phase only.Location is not something a restaurateur would die for. Parking must be found in the neighboring alleys, not hard to do. Yet first impressions upon entering the small patio between the restaurant and the wine bar are very positive – a secluded world on its own to relax and enjoy, especially during the warmer months. When a band is playing it is a perfect place to enjoy music, snacks and excellent wines. Washrooms serving all patio, wine bar and the restaurant not exactly what one would seek in a top restaurant, though.WIne list very good, Katjuša is not only a top sommelier, but also a wine lover and wine writer, the perfect combination. Markups exactly what one would ever hope for in a restaurant in a devoted wine-growing region. Range mostly from the 50 km radius, but also the rest of Italy is nicely covered. Service has always been excellent with Katjuša in charge, and her mother Majda doing the kitchen part. During the latest visit it was a major disaster with Katjuša sharing both responsibilities, and evidently non-professional staff helping as best as can be.To the food part, finally. Prices have always been irreproachable, especially considering the price vs. quality ratio. Previously I could easily award to cuisine 15 on a 1 to 20 scale, this one time it dropped sharply to 13- during the unfortunate visit. Traditional dishes from Collio and Friuli, Slovene and Italian, that were the pride of the house, were replaced on the occasion by a game of somewhat more innovative combinations with a mixed success – from truly good through fine to failures. I can only appeal to the fine ladies to reestablish their responsibilities or find some other solution in order to preserve the well deserved reputation of being one of the best (perhaps even the best) restaurant in Gorizia for a demanding gourmet. So – I shall definitely give it half a year and come back to check which direction they will take. I hope from all my heart it will be the wise one…

If you want to impress your spouse Moscardino is an excellent decision. The venue is located in the very heart of Gorica/Gorizia. You can choose seating outside in the square or inside. This place used to be a pharmacy but it was refurbished with style. The minimalistic design enhances your dining experience. The food was very good and the prices are moderate. The menu is quite short which I see as an advantage. Quality over quantity. Everything we had chosen was nourishing for our palates. Even the fried fish plate which I opposed to choose in the beginning but was talked into it by my spouse and the owner. I definitely encourage you to follow the waiter's/owner's advice in regards to food choices. The desert could be a bit better but it definitely didn't spoil the overall experience, especially because the digestivo on the house that followed was exquisite. The house wine, the friulano from Čedad/Cividale is a very decent choice. So if you don't drink much a 'quartino' (1/4 l) might be enough to accompany your fish. Otherwise they have a wide choice of local wine. After all the owner, Giorgio, runs also the wine bar next door.
