The shrines and temples of Nikko have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Here, you can visit the Toshogu Shrine, which dates from the 17th century and is a monument to (and the mausoleum of) Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of a shogunate that ruled Japan for 250 years. Travelers day-tripping from Tokyo generally focus on the sacred sites, but if you have extra time, explore the area’s beautiful waterfalls and lakes.

I left full of godwill. The staff treated me very well making a forenger feel at home. They brought me more than I ordered. Good food great feeling.
Stopped in due to high TripAdvisor ratings and we were NOT disappointed. The miso soup was good, the tempura was tender and hot and crispy, and the sushi was delicious. The English menu has mostly set plates but you can use GoogleTranslate to set your own combination. The atmosphere is typical sushi house but the husband-wife team are warm and helpful. She used PocketTalk (translator) to make sure she understood our order correctly, told us about the town and recommended a nearby onsen and even called to find out what time they opened. If you like tempura or sushi do stop in. Youâll have great food and a fun time.

Yuba rolls and the simple, modern restaurant environment in Nikko are what you should come to Zen for. Yuba is used around the sushi roll and yuba is essentially tofu skin or bean curd skin. When you're dining at Zen, you generally have two options: set meal for 2,000 yen or yuba rolls which has three different types of fillings. There is a yuba/soy milk cream dessert offered for 500 yen but that comes in the set meal anyway. The set meal is the best way to try a little of everything that Zen has to offer: yuba rolls, miso soup, the yuba/soy milk cream dessert, pickled veggies, and other small appetizer dishes. The small appetizers I got consisted of a small snail, octopus/soy bean cold mixture, purple sweet potato, and a boiled shrimp. The set menu comes with yuba roll with Japanese beef and wasabi; if you want the sea bream or edible wild plants in your yuba roll, you have to order them individually in 4 or 8 pieces (didn't inquire if I could switch it within the set meal). The restaurant is small as it only seats about 10 people but we got there in the mid afternoon on a weekday and there was no wait at all. Everything was really good in the set meal and the wasabi was more like a wasabi relish; just a little bit was really hot and added an nice kick to the Japanese beef yuba roll. The dessert was really creative and had some kind of green tea jelly, red bean, and doughy ball along with the yuba mixed on top of the soy milk cream. You've got to give Zen credit for their culinary creativeness and experimenting with different tastes and flavors. I'm sure if you're not a fan of tofu skin or bean curd, it might be wise to find other options. Perfect meal for us as we walked to the Nikko train station.
