I must have eaten here more than 10 times during my stay in San mateo. The staff is good and the beer is good too. Can't go wrong with any of their sushi, but i do prefer the tiger roll.

An extensive menu and not overly expensive as Japanese food goes around here. Service was fine. We could actually sit and talk in this little restaurant in the Marina Shopping Center. Ample parking at dinner time, but often crowded at lunch or other times. Food was pretty good.
Stopped by for lunch with a business colleague after a meeting nearby.Restaurant attached to hotel, so not immediately obvious when passing. Promptly shown to table, drinks order taken promptly, but then a delay before food order taken. Reasonable selection of choices, I was tempted by Bento box options ( which colleague selected), but went instead for the hand sushi rolls. Meals arrived separately, so mark down for service. Well presented, and tasty.Overall, OK but not special.

Discovered by my colleagues, we returned twice to this newly opened Japanese restaurant in the last one month. Freshly made sushi rolls with unique flavors not usually found in the area. Food presentation is sophisticated and visually pleasing. Price is moderate and reasonable. I am pretty sure we will go back again very soon.

My husband and I were disappointed when our favorite weekly sushi restaurant had to close and relocate to San Mateo (Tokies, not yet re-opened as of this writing). What a pleasant surprise to find Dozo Izakaya just opened: a brand new restaurant on the ground floor of a new building, right off of 92 in Foster City. Nice ambiance, clean and modern. Beautiful dishes/plates to showcase the gorgeous fish. Although newly opened, all of our favorite varieties of sashimi available including blue fin tuna, uni, and ocean trout. Excellent service. Nice selection of beer, wine, sake. Bonus is that they have a "Robata" grill, from which we did not order items but will be interesting in sampling the next time we go.... which will probably be in about a week.

Top of line sushi located in downtown San Mateo. Sitting at counter is best, where you can talk directly with Sam and see daily specials posted on the wall. Always very busy, so reservations are recommended. Always keep track of your orders, if you make multiple orders throughout your dining; staff does not give detailed bills. Environment is very basic, and a bit noisy. Sam's sushi has been always consistently excellent.
