Newly opened. Just reviewed today in The Des Moines Register Newspaper. Great value, service and sushi as well as various Asian dishes.
I've been here many times in this place gets a lot of hyperbole about being the best sushi in Des Moines. It may be I have unreasonable expectations because I lived in Japan and Hawaii and California. There are at least two other sushi restaurants in Des Moines one downtown in one near downtown that are equally as good or better in some ways. They still haven't cleaned up their bathrooms here and it really cost a lot of stress to one of the people I was with and there's not too much excuse for that. they also serve a variety of food which is one of the reasons I wanted to come because one of my friends does not like sushi but wanted a Chinese food. the problem is they don't know how to get it together or at least the last time I was there they did not know how to get it together so the meals came out at the same time and not one on one over 15 minutes. If you read my review so you can see that I normally don't post too much negative things and if it's a really bad experience I don't post it all. I just don't think they deserve all this kind of rave reviews that they get one it's really not that special. having said that if you have reasonable expectations you'll have a fairly good meal just be prepared to wait and realize that the parking also is miserable especially in the winter they don't go out and salt things so it's can be dangerous when the parking lot freezes over and what you have to walk in.

The service here is rushed and neither pleasant or welcoming. They aren't outright rude, stopping short of rolling their eyes if you don't order---- and mind you, we didn't order as we were not given Sushi menus. There were two large and loud parties seated nearby, so perhaps they were busy or annoyed with them. The food was ok. I have had much better Sushi and miso. Bento boxes looked like they were prepared in a factory with a shortage of food. Meh.

My wife and I took our daughter and her college aged friends out for a delightful, casual dinner at Akebono's. All of us went a little different route: sushi, rice dish, noodle dish and bento box. As I looked at all the clean plates, it was clear to me that all were satisfied. The sushi was particularly delicious -- maybe the best in DSM. The chicken in the noodle dish was dry, but not so in the rice dish - wonderful. Very attentive wait staff and "cool" decor will await you -- this was my first time and we will certainly go back!

Really enjoyed dinner on 5 April. The sushi was well prepared and delicious. The Thai dishes (beef salad, lamb, and Tom Yung Goong) were all fresh, well prepared and delicious. Plus, we overjoyed our server - he was pretty cool.If you haven't visited, what are you waiting for? I know we'll be back soon.

I am moving out of the area and had another great meal here last week. Yes it is busy and yes it can be an intense, energetic and loud scene on the weekends. If you like the food but don't like that environment, go during the week and look for an "early bird" type time frame. Sayonara to everyone at Sakari!
