Iretza Sagardotegia (cider house) it´s an innovative new concept of a typical cider house. Founded in 2008 honouring our most classic-iconic drink, CIDER. Two top references from the cider world in Gipuzkoa started this new adventure Etxeberria (Astigarra
Iretza Sagardotgia is a cidery-restaurant in one of the industry halls of Astigarraga region, on the outskirts of Donostia. I found this place looking for a cider tasting and cidery house visit and made an appointment to have a lunch there. We were in Donostia outside the real cider season, but this was our chance to get at least some kind of an idea of the traditions involved in the cider making. We were seated (as I had requested) in a table set in an old cider barrel, a kupela. We ordered 2 cyder-house menus of cod omelette, fried cod, T-bone steak and cheese. This is what the locals traditionally have with the cider in January-April. The menu is huge, we shared it with our children and were completely full afterwards, all four of us. The menu was 33â¬. Included was as much cider as one wished to drink, either from a bottle or from a barrel, tasting called "txotx". I was instructed (in Spanish...) how to manage the tap and glass: the cider is supposed to land from the first to the second in a long arch, causing it to sparkle and foam thus releasing the aromas and making it more fresh and fruity to enjoy. Having learned the trick I was left to help myself as new courses arrived to our table. The cod omelette was too salty and the cod served with green sweet peppers did not have too much taste. Could have had the meal without the starters. The T-bone steak, chuleton, however was just about the best steak I have had for a long time: soft and tender, very rare in the middle, cut apart from the bone and sliced to facilitate our part and sprinkled generously with salt flowers. Practically no spices at all, just the tastiness of the delicious meat, that's all it takes! Usually we do like our meat medium, this was way more rare than that, but with meat as tender as this and the helpful slicing we savoured every bit of the huge steak. The cheese was served with apple jam, a good combination with cider. The cider was dry, fruity, but with nice acidity. Style resembled that of some English producers but is yet different.(I haven't tasted English ciders fresh). I realize the cider was not brewed in the same house and really not fresh from the barrel. Still, I got my piece of the tradition. Absolutely worth trying for any friend of cydery drinks!

A group of us had a selection of starters, tuna, mushrooms and octopus. The tuna was cubed and seared, served as a pile with onions and tomato. Fresh and good. The mushrooms were pretty but tasted ok. The octopus was not tender, tough to cut but flavoursome. Then followed a great dish of squid in caramelised onion. Wholesome and tasty but again lacked the âje ne sais quoiâ. Some had the cod throat in basque gelatinous sauce which was pronounced very good. That dish is a matter of personal taste. Service varied, mostly staff seemed grim. Smiles dont cost much, who knows...Thank you for your opinion.

Rezola Sagardotegia is one of the many cider cellars located in Astigarraga, the most important cider town in Basque Country, only 10km far from Donostia/San Sebastián. Here it is produced more or less the 80 % of total cider produced in Basque Country. In the restaurant you can taste some different kinds of cider (depending on apples, on fermentation months, etc.) and we could taste a real cider menu, which include cod omelette, cod with vegetables, txuletón (a very big steak of Basque cows) and cheese with quince and nuts. All dishes were excellent, especially the txuletón. Here you can eat some Basque dishes and really it is only for people of Basque Country!(See also Sagardoetxea)

The TRACAMUNDANA is a restaurant and pintxos bar. Traditional basque cuisine with avant garde and fusion accents. Quality and well presented dishes with a reasonable price.
We dined at Tracamundana on a Friday night, on arrival the front bar had live music. The restaurant is towards the rear but part of the area has tables for bar diners. The menu is typically Basque but does feature the elusive vegetables in the form of a rather good plate of grilled mixed vegetables. Recomended as a shared starter or to accompany what will be a meat or fish dominated main course. Crusty white bread comes with a modest pool of reasonable quality olive oil. There is a good selection of good quality wines by the glass as they use a special device that maintains the cork seal on the bottle but allows the wine out through a hollow needle. The octopus leg starter was one of the best I have had (I am working on having had all 8 at some time). It was accompanied by another rare Basque restaurant item, nicely roasted and salted baby potatoes. My wife's hake was fairly standard for the region. My boned sucking pig was good, tender pink meat, not too dry or fatty. Accompanied by two pieces of sweet potato. Overall, we felt that the food, whilst good, was below what we would have expected in San Sebastian. Maybe a higher grade restaurant for really good food is needed. Still, change (just) from â¬100 for two.

We visited Iraeta (located in the Gross region of San Sebastián) on a Thursday night and managed to get a table outside. They serve made to order pintxos but are best know for their steak, tomatoes and peppers, which we had and all were amazing. We are regular visitors to bar Nestor (closed for vacations during or trip) and between the the four of us there was a split discussion and on which was best. My advice try them both! The bill came to â¬90 for the four of us which included 4/5 drinks each and the steak peppers and tomatoes.

Let me state at the outset that this my only experience of eating at a sidreria (cider house) so this is not a comparative review. What is indeed certain is that this was one of the best meals I have had during my substantial travels all over the world. Food was very abundant and freshly prepared. Quality of the T-bone second to none - had not had something similar since my last visit to South America. Unlimited cider was a novelty, even more so the manner in which one fills the glass!!!!!!!!!! We opted for the set menu which at 30Euros each (including unlimited wine and drinks) was extremely fair value. Another novelty was eating without any plates!!!!! Place is very clean and service was excellent. One of the reasons why I will definitely return to visit the area.

Astarbe is a long tradition Cider House. Since 1563 we are sharing good times with you, using our 5 thousands year knowledge we are making our best cider and best courses to you. Come and live like us, come and be a Basque.
Cider season is of my favorite dinner appointments with friends and of all of them this is my favorite one because it maintains the classic enviroment but without standing tables, and mainly because the food is very very good. Will continue repeating it.
