Estoril

Reviewed By Marj H

There is very little information on TA for restaurants in this town. We settled on Estoril, the restaurant is very appealing and I watched a video interview online with the chef. The restaurant has no English menu so we took our iPad and translated the menu. This took almost an hour during which time we were not approached by the staff apart from providing us with WiFi.A large group arrived at about 9 pm so we were pleased we had settled on our order. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, the chef actually occasionally appeared in the restaurant. They have a set menu which includes everything for 28 euros but we decided to have a la carte which is quite pricey. I ordered the suckling pig served with peach for 20 euros and my husband ordered the tornado for the same price. Both dishes were specialties of the region and mine was very tasty, something I have never eaten before. My husband's steak did not resemble a traditional French or Australian version of Tornedo and he was disappointed. The waitress who spoke no English explained that the meat was Raza Morucha from Salamanca, a prized grass fed beef but unfortunately it did not compare to Australian beef.Overall we enjoyed the meal but felt the mains were overpriced.

The old spanish paradores continue resting on their old laurels doing nothing to justify the price charged. Only two ladies serving more than 40 guests. Forgot many things asked and the last dish took more than one hour to come to the table. Simply a disasterWe are sorry that your experience at our restaurant was not up to their expectations, however we appreciate that you can communicate your opinion as it is the best weapon we have to improve every day.Thank you for helping us improve at the points where we have failed in the service wanted us to enjoy. We will thoroughly analyze your comment because it is not usual that says what happens.Yours faithfully

Our group stumbled across this place just an hour or so before our lunch - and sat down for a drink. Before long someone decided to order a couple of plates of pulpo - just delicious - wonderfully cooked on a bed of potatoes and mouthwatering, this was followed by some deep fried chiperones (like small squid things) all washed down with great wine. The staff were friendly and it was well priced.

Excellent burger. Very moist in a delicious bun. Chips were proper ones. Thick, crispy on outside and soft interior. They were also very hot which is rare in Spain. I have been traveling to Spain for 20 plus years and definitely the best burgers I have had.

Enjoy our traditional cuisine in a historic building belonging to the Cathedral Cabildo from the 14TH century. "La Canóniga" was used to store the tithe that the priest received. In 1815, this building was the headquarters of the English troops.

The main reason we booked this hotel was because of the child's play area as advertised. After a 7 hour car journey with a 4 year old, we were expecting to let off a little stream in the play area. Arriving at 6pm found it was closed, so thought we could leave a little later the next morning after a play. Turned out we were only able to use the play area between the hours of 2-3pm (no good if you are stopping for one night!). The play area is only for booked activities not a general play ground. The hotel is set in lovely gardens with two pools but the room we found a little tired. Staff generally were very pleasant, but don't expect much English.

Were enticed inside because of earlier good reviews. No other diners present for lunch when we entered. Ordered the Chuleton menu for 2. Salad starter and dessert good. The included Farinato dish so,so. The main event however, the Chuleton, was poor. Not cooked hot enough and it was more fat and gristle. The meat was tough. The incuded small jar of red house wine was ice cold. When we left still no other diners. Wonder why. The waiter was friendly but this did not resque the occasion.

Zascandil

Reviewed By CambridgeFil

We were wandering around the beautiful city of Cuidad Rodrigo and asked one of the shop owners where he would recommend that we eat. He recommended Zascandil and, as we were leaving the shop, one of the other customers asked us whether the owner had recommended Zascandil as, he said, it was the best restaurant in the town. So we went and, boy, were they correct! We asked the owner (who was delightful) what he'd recommend and we had the most delicious Japanese-style tuna. We ate every bit and could not have enjoyed it more. He also suggested a wine to have with it and the combination was outstanding. We had left the ferry in Bilbao that afternoon en route to Lisbon and really wished we'd arranged to stay the night in the town to explore it further; it really is delightful and really worth a visit. Then, several miles further on the road to Lisbon, we discovered that we'd left our credit card at the restaurant and phoned the restaurant to discover that the owners had phoned every hotel in the area to find out whether we were staying in the city and when they discovered that we weren't, posted the card to us. We can't praise this restaurant highly enough. Beautiful food, delightful owners, a charming restaurant in a beautiful town. So, if you are in the area, make sure you visit Cuidad Rodrigo and then this restaurant will make for a very special experience. Muchisimas gracias.
