Pho Number One

Reviewed By Wong F

6 of us came here for pho on the recommendation from my wife who came here last winter with our son's hockey team. My thoughts:Physical premises/decor: somewhat run down and unclean. Not dirty, just not super clean. Bathrooms were fine. Decor was nonexistent and nondescript. Food quality: fresh and healthy portions. The pho broth was not as aromatic as others I have had and the taste in the soup interestingly stayed near the bottom of the bowl; the top layer was quite bland. The bottom was much better. The meat portions were adequate but the brisket and tripe were not tender enough. The rare beef however was quite excellent.Price: a little more hefty than similar places in Vancouver but still a cheap meal that fills the stomach.Service: the couple that own the place tried hard to please us which didn't go unnoticed. It is also comforting to know that this Vietnamese restaurant is owned and operated by Vietnamese Canadians as opposed to another Asian culture. However, there were some hiccups.1) my wife asked for some hot peppers for her pho. The female proprietor promptly returned with three whole peppers in her hand and deposited them at my wife's table place. Not sliced, not in a side dish. Just three whole peppers. Curious.2) my son found in his pho a hard plastic cap. Upon getting the owners attention, they profusely apologized and comped his meal (which was not necessary but appreciated)... and told us they yelled at the kitchen staff for the error. I didn't have the heart to mention my son's girlfriend found a small sliver of steel wool in her pho.In the end, too many negatives could not be ignored. This establishment could do better, and perhaps it was just a series of unfortunate events, however on this occasion it all added up to three stars.

We took ours to go for a trip up the Coquihalla but you can also eat in. Smaller menu than the Vancouver location but just as delicious. Meatballs are just spicy enough but the porchetta is the star. And their mustard is also a fam fav.

From the moment we walked in, we could feel the genuine care in this place...The food is lovingly designed, providing options for those with limitations in what they can eat while still putting in real effort to make it palatable. The Salads and soups are creative and taste great.Sorry, no pics of my sandwich... I was hungry.I also appreciate the walls are filled with the work of local artists as well...

My husband suggested Cheryl's for lunch one day.All the sandwiches are on homemade brown bread there are no other options. I do not like brown bread, never have so that eliminated all the sandwiches for me as a lunch option. My husband had their famous chicken sandwich and I had a bit of it. It was okay but I've certainly had far better. I had the crustless quiche of the day and it was also not very good. I make a far superior quiche myself. It was very disappointing. For the prices charges the food should be way better. I've also never been to a restaurant that did not offer any options as far as the type of bread you wanted for your sandwich. We would not returnI'm sorry you didn't enjoy your experience.

Clayburn Village Store and Tea Shop

My husband thought this would make a nice drive to go there and have an English lunch. About half the place is the restaurant/tea room and the other candies and food items. There were a lot of people there today. We stayed for lunch. It was OK but what was very disappointing was the apple pie. I suspect it started out fine but they microwaved it so the crust was soggy /not flaky and the apples rubbery; even when it was only semi-heated. When we asked about it, they confirmed they microwave to heat the pie so ask for it not to be heated next time (there won't be a next time). The meal part was OK. Most chairs have wooden seats so not that comfortable. It does seem to be quite popular though.

(and I think vegan, as well, but don't want to say 100%)Took a friend there, and she was impressed. Good eats, friendly staff, great 50s-60s diner decor. If you're out Abbotsford way, make a point of parking in one of the free 2, or 3, hour parking spots, wander the renovated downtown core, after a great breakfast, or wander first, and go for lunch.Hi there, thanks for the great review. I’m glad we were able to impress your friend and we are happy to hear you chose to bring her here ! And We are able to offer limited vegan options. Cheers
