Yaizu is a something like a Tuna city in Japan. Many fishing company based in Yaizu as a mother port of operation. "Tairyo Yamachan" locates nearby Yaizu fish market and provides excellent seafood such as Sashimi, Tenpura and several kinds of grilled fish. Especially if you order a Mix Sashimi for 2 persons, it is good for 4 persons. Actually many boat owners and crew members use this restaurant for dinner. You can enjoy several kinds of locally made Japanese Sake here, foods and drink is excellent but seat and table are a little bit small and noisy since it is a “Izakaya” style restaurant.

I have to make the correction here - it is Maguro Chaya and not Magurojaya.Maguro Chaya is located at the Yaizu Fishing Port - right at the tip of Yaizu. As you drive in, you will see warehouse and containers lined up presumably for the transportation of fresh seafood especially tuna. I was recommended by my Japanese colleague that Yaizu is the place to head to for fresh tuna and he was spot on!Maguro Chaya translates into Tuna Tea house started as a wholesaler and then opened a small location in Yaizu to cater to retail customers. Located on the ground floor is a supermarket selling seafood and all things associated with seafood. On the second level is the restaurant and that is where the gem is. We were ushered to our table but the menu was in Japanese and sorry, no English menu. But one look and you will understand why there is no need for n English menu! Just looking at the pictures, you will already know what you wanted. The lady serving us also spoke some English so that helped too. When you come to Yaizu, it is tuna you want . So we ordered three of the Otoro-don (tuna belly rice) and also a tuna sashimi platter. I was told the white bait is caught fresh everyday so I ordered the sashimi version instead of the white bait rice.It was the right decision of course. The Otoro-don (¥2,800) was excellent. The tuna is what they call Minami Maguro which is southern bluefin tuna. Top grade tuna - 9 slices of it in a bowl of rice. The cut were at least quarter inch thick and the tuna was really fresh. What you expect from an Otoro (tuna belly) is what you get but at a fraction of the price. I would only order the Otoro-don if I were you. No point going for something less.In the selection of tuna sashimi (maguro moriawase - ¥2,000), there was the Chutoro (minima mature), the regular tuna as well as cuts from the big eye tuna. I had one of the smoothest, melt-in-your-mouth tuna - a white coloured tuna cut. The moriawase (selection) cut were at least half an inch thick - talk about great value for money. On the first day, we also ordered the white bait sashimi - fresh catch of the day and when you dip it into the ginger soya sauce dip, the sweetness of the white bait makes it so worthwhile to spend that little more. After the meal, you may go down to level one to shop in the supermarket or better still, walk around the coast area and work off that meal. Highly recommended.
