Great clam chowder. Has a slight “cajun” flavor but creamy with a reasonable amount of potatoes and lots of clams! Halibut Fish & Chips reminded me of English Fish & Chips. Chips ( french fries) were quite good. Good beer on tap.

Quaint venue for seafood right on north bound hi-way 101. I had the fried oysters sandwich and my side choice was fries. Small fresh oysters and reminded me of some of the best po boys I’ve had. Fried to perfection. I tasted my husbands cod and it was great too. I really liked the slaw. I’m not usually a slaw fan but I really liked this one. It’s fresh and not loaded with mayo. Glad we tried it.

This was one of the finest dinners that we've enjoyed in this country. That's not an exaggeration. The quality of the food, the skill of preparation, the creative presentation, the comfortable setting and the attentive but unobtrusive service all made a perfect dinner. See the photos and captions. Of particular note: my Chateaubriand was perfectly cooked (rare-med.rare) and then trapped under a glass some with veggies and aromatic smoke that brought out complementary flavors without overcooking the meat. Everything else showed the relentless attention to excellence that comes with chefs at the top of their Craft. We've dined at Michelin star restaurants in NYC and in Europe, and this was as good as any of them and better than some. It's certainly in my Top Ten Dining Experiences, and I've had some mighty fine dining experiences!

Great service. Was busy even early on a weeknight for dinner. Lots to choice from including specials. We had several appetizers. The mussels were different than those I’ve had previously. We really enjoyed the calamari. Several of the rolls were very good. I was not a fan of the seared tuna.

Best oysters! Even better than back home in Tomales Bay. The oysters are much bigger and tastier. I am definitely addicted to them. And here I get more bang for my bucks plus the ladies at the counter were very friendly and efficient. Only bad thing is I'm a 9 hour drive away.

This small restaurant on the main downtown drag (S. Broadway aka Hwy 101) is conveniently located in a little pocket of restaurants near the embarcadero. It has a hip, trendy feel with the string lighting, assortment of seemingly random tables and chairs, and quaint decor. While the food was good (average fish & chips and good halibut burger) and prices reasonable, the service was plainly average. We got a good indication of the service to come when our party of 2 took approximately 20 minutes to be seated at one of the three 2-top tables along the front window, while there were three vacant and clean 4-top tables sitting open in the middle of the dining floor. In fact a line of 3 more couples formed behind us while those 3 larger tables sat idle and we all stood around waiting for one of the three 2-tops to finally open up. Apparently it's their policy to not sit couples at a table that could maybe, possibly be used for a foursome at some point in the evening? Weird. Our waiter was not terribly attentive either, getting water refills or clearing our empty plates and only checked in with us once during the entire meal before dropping off the check. While not a bad experience, we had better fish & chips at another popular spot in Coos Bay, and we'll likely skip SharkBites the next time we're in Coos Bay.

Our family of three was craving a hearty, warm, meat and potatoes kind of meal late on Friday evening. We had a very pleasant experience with great customer service, a cool atmosphere, and delicious food! We were recommended amazing choices for dinner and we definitely recommend them as well: weiner schnitzel, sauerbraten, and clam chowder. We also paid with cash which got us a free dessert, we chose strudel and everything was tasty!

Hilltop House

After being told about this restaurant years ago by a friend, my wife and I have been threatening to eat here since. Finally, while at the coast this weekend, we made it and we're glad we did! While this is an older establishment, it is cozy and rich in comfort with excellent service! Our gem of a waitress, Jessica, was VERY knowledgeable of every dish and what went into them. This is what you expect from a wait staff member and Chef Robert Irvine of Restaurant Impossible fame would have been impressed! The wine list is impressive -- though not extensive. They have a good selection of beers on tap as well. I had the Rogue Hazelnut Brown which is my favorite. As for the food, our friend had the New York steak with the Gorgonzola and mushroom topping ans swore it was to die for and cooked perfectly! My wife had the seafood lasagna and could only say, "Wow!" I sampled it and repeated her exclamation!I had the special Ling Cod with the Verblanc sauce and the "Swiss" potatoes. Superb is a fitting description...especially of the "Swiss" fries! Although Jessica told us a recent guest from Switzerland insisted the fries weren't Swiss at all, I like the name and they were delicious! So, as I stated earlier in this writing, this is an older establishment and has a few rough edges. Be sure to "step up" if entering the men's room and there may be a few rough spots on the carpet. Still, the Hilltop ranks as fine dining and an excellent place to eat! Be sure to seek it out when you are in the area. You'll be glad you did!

Captain's Choice Family Fish House

Traveling with family this was a last minute choice to have lunch in Coos bay before continuing our trip. It was easy to find and there is a large parking lot and when weentered the restaurant there is a carved, large wooden figure of a fisherman, perhaps the captain, which was charming. They have booths and also table with plenty of space between them so you aren't having a meal with strangers. The service was very good and they had quite an extensive menu with many choices. One person ordered the po'boy dinner plate and declared it the best po'boy they had ever eaten, someone else had the scallops meal, another had a sandwich with a fruit salad and I had the grilled shrimp on a skewer. Everything was cooked to order which took just a bit of time but we all were so happy with our choices that they were worth waiting for. There is a small aquarium in the dining room and it was fun to watch the assorted fish which were unusual and not the usual gold fish or koi.All in all a really great experience and I can't wait to return when I am back in Coos Bay.
