Things to do in Monterey Park
I had always wanted to try Poke and had read good things about this place. The guy behind the counter--didn't get his name, sorry--was very helpful and walked us through ordering. It's Build-Your-Bowl style--pick your rice, pick your seafood, pick your toppings, pick your sauce(s). The option is how many scoops of seafood--two ($7.99), three ($8.99), or five ($10.99), and all the same or all different. We had salmon, spicy tuna, yellowtail, octopus and squid. All were excellent. Topping options were cilantro, onion, cucumber, avocado, jalapeño, ginger, wasabi, and seaweed salad. I had heard that the sauces can overpower the fish and this was the case. Next time I'll ask for half the amount of sauce, so as not to mask the tasty fish. Or, maybe the sauce on the side since it was very good. They definitely hooked me on poke. I'll be back to Pokiholic next time in Monterey Park!

This is one of the best in Los Angeles. It's not for beginners, as others have pointed out that most of the serves can't translate the items. Still, a lot of it can be figured out. Certainly worth the adventure. For regular afficionados, this is is must, and worth the drive from anywhere in L.A.

The skinny:Parking: large paved lotDecor: worn out banquet styleService: abruptFood: real Chinese, sloppy styleWow. I love Chinese food but I was not ready for this menu! Turtle, duck, frog, and all parts of the pig and cow. We came here on a Sunday at 1015am bc most places are packed with a line. We ate here til 11am and not another soul entered. We ordered:Shrimp with salt - mom loved itShrimp chow mein - too much gravy, noodles not crispPork Peking style - so sweet, large portionthese meals came with tea (decent) , rice (fine), soup (unidentified meat and a hair in it)I probably will stick to dim sum. The other disturbing fact about this place is the fish tanks on the wall. Some of the fish looked like they were dying and floating upside down. Yikes.

This is probably the cheapest dim sum restaurant in SGV. When I say cheapest, not just the price but the portion of the dishes. You really get your moneys worth. Like their baked BBQ pork buns, three huge ones on one plate! Everything is decent in size. Get there early, like around 11AM or later after the lunch rush. Don't look for ambience or quiet environment though, you won't find any. It's rather noisy and the place is just...bustling with regular working class people. Service maybe lacking also, but you can help yourself with boxes, etc. We always order a whole bunch of food and take the left overs home. Good for another two or three meals. They also have an extensive Dinner Special menu in the evening, good value. For $9.99 you can get a whole roasted duck! It's a good place for family but may not be fancy enough for entertaining guests. Ample parking spaces in the parking structure next door, for free.

Finger-licking Cajun-style seafood, where bibs are the attire of choice. Clams, shrimp, corn are a must try item. Everything comes in a clear plastic bag with your choice of seasoning. If you're not sure get it all. Only bad thing is the wait can be easily 2 hours. Also parking is very difficult since they only have a few spots, most parking will have to in the residential area near by, along the street.

Our group of four arrived at 11am on a Thursday. Underground parking was easy and there was no waiting to be seated in the large restaurant. Escalator and elevator are available to take you from the garage. I really liked the atmosphere because conversation was easy even as customers started to fill the restaurant. Unusual dishes like Osmanthus Pudding are available. The service was good. Given a choice though, I would not drive from central Orange County to eat here due to traffic and distance. The typical dim sum dishes are no better than in many other closer places (Irvine).

We had to arrive at 4:30 pm to get a table for an early dinner on Motherâs Day. No reservations accepted. Parking is very crowded in the lot but they have valet parking. There is also parking on the streets if lucky to find one. We had a party of six and ordered the Family Dinner for $54 which included 5 dishes - House Seafood Soup or Sweet and Sour Soup, Clams with Hot Spicy Sauce, Kung Pao Chicken, Sauted Pea Sprout, and a Steamed Whole Fish (Tilapia). Our main dish was the Newport Special Lobster (market price). A medium lobster was sufficient for our party of six. Everything was fresh and delicious! The lobster was all gone but we took the spicy lobster sauce and leftover rice home to make a fried rice dish tomorrow. This was a very good value for a lobster dinner! In a per person basis, each person cost approximately $50, including tip.

Went with some locals who said it was good and affordable. Like many authentic dim sum places it is super loud. If you are native and donât speak Chinese, be prepared for an adventure. The cart ladies are pushy (pun intended) and aggressively try to convince you that you want what is on their cart, even if you have a lot on your table already. Getting a glass of water takes an act of Congress and you know how well they are doing these days. If you ask what a particular food item is, be prepared for an answer that doesnât make a lot of sense. They have a picture menu on the table that you can point to things on which is a good safety net. It was a surprisingly good price for a decent amount of food. Be aware, during a busy lunch rush, it can look like a hurricane came through in the bathrooms.

From coast to coast, the dim sum are very similar. I always wish restaurants would be more creative. I was very pleased with the dim sum here. There are so many different selections in addition to the traditional ones. Everything was delicious. The service was great. The waiter always checking my teapot. Empty dishes were removed promptly. This is one of the best dim sum restaurant I have ever been to. I wished I had a bigger stomach so I can try more things. Thumbs up!
