Couple night out and wanted seafood, found Spiros on TA and gave them a try. Decent meal but really just an OK restaurant overall. Scallops entree was somewhat bland, marginally fresh and smaller sized scallops, OK sides. Seafood buffet was slightly better and decent selection. Eat in the newer section to the right, the original part is clean but tired decor. Service was good but at less than half full the kitchen was fairly slow.If you want seafood and shy away from the pre-packaged chains this is your best choice in Union County, but for a special night or meal you should take the trip into Charlotte.

Sea Hut

We had been told there was a wonderful seafood restaurant in downtown Monroe. We were a block away for early voting and decided to take the opportunity. I never saw the rating of the former service station, but I have my suspicions. My wife chose the whiting; I tried the frog legs (closer in size to tadpole legs). Trying to drain as much fat from my food as possible, I found the grease yellowish brown {that means very old}. Unless you enjoy the taste of ground cabbage core, stay away from the creamy cole slaw. I asked my wife about her fried zucchini -- mostly breading in old grease. When I asked if the onion rings were home-made, the tone of the "No" response sounded a lot like "Of course not, why would you even ask?". The lady taking the order said everything was cooked fresh; my wife thought everything came straight from the freezer. It was not a pleasant experience.

I buy the batter dipped fish sandwich with cheese, lettuce and mayo and it has ALWAYS been perfect and delicious! Very inexpensive, double the meat of McD fish and much better tasting.

While they used to be across the street, Mayfair (under the same ownership) continues to be the main fish camp restaurant in Monroe. The portions are plentiful and lightly fried (unless you order broiled). The prices are well within reason. The service is less-than-spectacular but you can always flag down the waitress. The good thing here is that nothing is fried to the point of crunch and nothing else; the green shrimp are wonderful, the oysters just right, and the fish is fresh. If you like old school fish camp, this is the place in Monroe.
