At the foot of Monemvasia Castle, under the shadow of the imposing rock, lies the restaurant "To Kastro", with a tradition of 38 years and passion for good food. You'll find it on your left hand side just after crossing the bridge leading to the Castle.
Spent an hour here over lunch before climbing up towards the old castle. Several terraces available, some with good views if you can take the heat of the sun (even in April!). Food was ok but nothing special. A Greek salad, fish soup and calamari with bread, water and a glass of wine cost â¬26.60. The salad was good and plentiful, the fish soup was not a large portion and the calamari was very chewy compared with other similar meals. The calamari came with chips. There were several cats hanging around although one of thrusts was provided with a small children's water pistol to fire at that's if they were bothering them and their dog! The cats were a bit of a nuisance especially if you don't like them. They take Visa cards.Hello our restaurant is not situated inside the castle we don t serve fish soup and we never did your review is about another restaurant, ours is situated outside the castle after the bridge and we serve pizza, pasta and grilled meats there must be a mistake about the place of your review! Could you please correct it thank you!

Surely the location helps to get fascinated: tables on the quay and on a veranda at the first floor of an old fishermanâs house watching the longest fjord of the Mediterranean, a protected area where flamingos and other birds come every spring. Differently from the typical Greek tavernas, no folk music from the radio, no people talking too loud, but a refined atmosphere, well educated people, a touch of simplicity and class together. We went there just to enjoy a fabulous grouper which few hours before was still swimming in the deep clear waters of the Myrtoon sea. They served it slowly, patiently grilled, not necessary but appreciated was the ladolèmono (oil and lemon) dressing, and we were simply delighted by the care in cooking it. A sumptuous Kydonitsa wine completed the triumphant dinner. Very kind the owners and absolutely honest the final price.

We went to the restaurant after it had been recommended by a local for its excellent cuisine. The truth was miles away from what we had been said.We tried the fried minced chickpeas, french fries, eggplants in the oven, fried meatballs in tomato sauce and beef steak. The latter was ok, the meatballs were ok as well, nothing special though. Everything else was below average.Service was ok.In all it was a below average dinning experience for me even by taverna criteria.

An old family's restaurant in the center of Monemvasia beside the big public parking and at the old port.AKTAION Restaurant is run by family and it was opened about 80 years ago, offers you a place of total relaxation, where you can enjoy traditional Greek
It's the village's most suggested restaurant, with decades of presence and tradition. There you can see natural aromatic herbs drying on tables, under the care of this tavern's chefs. Food is really genuine, simply cooked, may be too much simply, indeed we expected something more, as we found more tasty food in many other restaurant and tavern of Greece. Anyway the most important thing is to change the wine, because the one you can find there is the worst we found in all Greece!

To Kanoni Restaurant is characterized by the Peloponnesian cuisine, which is based in three elements: Top quality products, perfection in implementation and creativity. Years of experience search for the best that nature has to offer, each and every seaso
In Monemvasia, expect that restaurants are touristified: less good and more expensive than elsewhere on the Peloponnese. To Kanoni is no exception. On the menu, we found Grilled Tuna Souvlaki quite appealing. But â¬26 seemed a bit steep, also fresh fish at â¬85 per kilo. Or a portion of lobster at â¬85? Boy, we are not in Paris or London, we are in Greece!Okay, the meat dishes looked quite good on the menu. The signature dish seemed to be "Tsigariasto lamb, Slow cooked in wine and herbs, Cretan recipe served with French fries" at â¬13.90. Promising, isn't it? So, we ordered it. What we got, was simply bland. Almost tasteless. Which herbs? We could not taste them. In regular taverns, you get a similar lamb dish for â¬8.00, and it was not worth any more. Same with "Oregano Lamb". We could not taste any oregano.Shall I add that the service was less friendly than elsewhere in Greece? The lady owner was quite charming, when she greeted us, but the waiter who served us was not at all.But that's Monemvasia. Expensive, bland, not friendly. But we did not come for food, we came for history.Hi Mr Traveller1959, Thank you for taking the time to right your opinion. Let me explain some things about the Castle of Monemvasia and our restaurant. The Grilled Tuna Souvlaki at 26⬠is the fillet of the Tuna (no bones and very tender). It is not the Souvlaki you imagine on the wooden small skewer. Do not want to persuade you but it is one of our best dishes for people who can appreciate it. Fresh fish by Kg. at 85/Kg, Local fishermen sell the A quality fish at the price of 35-40⬠depending on the demand. We do not buy cheep, freeze it and sell it for fresh to German tourists. In the price we also debone the fish infront of you at your table from our trained waiters. The lobster is no portion but by the kg. also, same as the fresh fish applies for the lobster it is by order and always alive before you can enjoy it. You might not be in Paris or London but you are in Monemvasia in Greece. One of the most unique places in all of Europe a live Byzantine Castle preserved by Natura, and managed by archeologists so that it can be maintained the way it used to be. As you saw in the Castle all products are being carried by workers from the gate to every house, Hotel or Restaurant, this alone makes the cost a bit higher than the rest of the Pelopennese. I cannot say anything about your prefrences and tastes they are personal but the lambs are one of the dishes we get the most congratulations on. If the problem would be with one of the two lamb dishes i could say that maybe there was a mistake from our Chef (something difficult to happen from a professional) but you had complains on Tripadvisor (not at our waiter) for both lamb dishes.I am very sorry you had that opinion about Monemvasia.

As soon as we arrived we were attended by the friendly staff. We were seated outside to enjoy the sounds of the sea and the rising of the moon. The menu was just long enough to whet our appetites, and also translates that all dishes would be well made.We ordered the Spaghetti with Shrimp which was exquisite. Cute place with a nice decoration. It took some time to be served so it would be best to visit the places you want to see and then visit the place for refreshments and/or food. The cappuchino was flavourable. The pies were fried so keep it in mind if you are on a diet. The staff was really friendly.Dear Foteini, thanks for the positive feedback! We are glad you liked the decoration - the aesthetic of Chrisovoulo is our pride and every single detail was created with love. We recognize your small complaint about the waiting and we really appreciate your patience... Weâre doing our best to make sure every costumer leaves our place feeling his/her best, so our service is pretty personalized. About the pies â this is a misunderstanding. Our pies are in no way shape or form fried. It is a unique dish, created with yellow flour and oven cooked in a special traditional appliance. The combination of the two creates a pie that has this perhaps yellow color and crispy texture that resembles a fried product. However, like we said it is actually oven cooked and guests who keep a balanced diet can absolutely enjoy it guilt-free. We hope to see you again.

I went to Mateo's at the recommendation of the hotel receptionist and I was not disappointed. It is located at the small harbour of Gefira with a view towards the rock of Monemvasia.I ordered a Greek salad and a seafood platter. However, I was told that this was far too much for one person. The waiter suggested a half portion of salad and that he would ask the chef whether he could prepare a platter for one person. The chef obliged and my wish was fulfilled. I also wanted some white wine with the dinner. The waiter said that they did not have wine by the glass but only full bottles and one half bottle. He suggested that I order a full bottle since there was a better choice and it cost only slightly more than the half bottle and that I could take it with me if I did not finish it. I followed his advise and was served a wine which I enjoyed so much that I finished it while watching the people promenading around the harbour.
