Reviews on Seafood food in Matera, Province of Matera, Italy. Get to Matera quickly, because it’s still relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists. In town, visit the Domenico Ridola National Museum. Matera’s real claim to fame, though, and the reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the extensive series of cave dwellings ("i sassi") southeast of town, first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian monks. You’ll see individual cells, chapels, and even some churches, many adorned with Byzantine decorations and frescoes.

We arrived to Sassi di Matera at lunch time. We chose La Grotta nei Sassi restaurant and it was a good choice, we were very satisfied.Because of my wife's food intolerance, we had - as always - prepared lists of allowed and forbidden ingredients. Our hosts were very friendly and helpful and had prepared a excellent salad for her using the lists. They even asked about ingredients not on our lists. As they were told that we were in a hurry, our lunch was ready in no time at all. Both the octopus salad for antipasto and the local specialty, Oricchiette con i Cima di Rape for me were very tasty. The wine of the house was also very good, we enjoyed it. Unfortunately, we had not enough time for I Dolci, because of our time schedule, it was a very brief visit to Sassi di Matera. We would recommend this restaurant.

Recommended by chef Nicola in Osteria San Francesco where we had complete faith on him after trying there, this restaurant had actually another surprise found in Matera. A simple menu and everything was cooked to preserve its natural taste without being salty or greasy. We shared the beet sauce pasta and the steak. Al dente pasta that blends well with the beetroot with pistachio nuts as a fresh starter. The steak was tender, juicy but not greasy. It's simply simple yet pleasing and to finish off the day without a fatty greasy feel in the stomach. One more note, the price was reasonable and truly value for money with such quality. Dear Mrs Irene, We're very pleased for your words and glad you had a good time in our restaurant. It was a pleasure for us having you with us. Hoping to see you soon, we send our best regards

I went here with my boyfriend who normally hates gluten free food (he doesn't require gluten free, he just chooses to eat with me) and he loved this place. It tasted like normal pasta and though the portions appear small they are very filling. They don't make pizzas for lunch so we opted for a truffle pasta and also a basil/tomato pasta. The truffle pasta was very creamy and rich even tho it was dairy free and the tomato pasta was full of flavour. We were also given two batches of bread (which we might have been charged a small amount for but the bill doesn't break down prices and it would've been around â¬0.50 per basket. My truffle pasta cost â¬14 my boyfriends pasta cost â¬8 and we also ordered a bottle of water and were given two bowls of gluten free bread. The bill came to â¬27.Highly recommend!

The place is adorable, the view of the hill sitting outside is incredible, the food was spectacular, with an extensive variety of regional dishes. Reasonably priced and good portions. Friendly staff. We were celebrating a birthday and they helped us get a cake from a local pastry shop. It was fantastic, I strongly recommend it! Also strongly recommend the burrata dish and the lamb!

This wonderful restaurant is tucked away in one of the back lanes of the old town of Matera. It is worth going to the Information Centre if necessary to find its location. The waiters are attentive and provide excellent service. The food was local and most enjoyable.

We picked this restaurant because of the excellent Tripadvisor reviews, and its proximity to the cathedral square, where we visited the recently restored cathedral. Initially, it looked like we would not get a reservation, because the restaurant website noted that reservations needed to be made 48 hours in advance. I talked to the reception people in the hotel lobby (the restaurant is connected to a hotel just on the cathedral square), and they were able to get us a reservation for four at the last minute. So happy they did!The restaurant is very nicely appointed, with a great atmosphere. Service was superb - very friendly, but very professional as well. All the dishes were very well explained, and each dish was wonderful and perfectly prepared. This was one of the best meals of our trip. Prices were reasonable in relation to the quality of the food and service. A reasonably priced wine (Nero Meta) recommended by our waiter was so well received by my tablemates, that they took a picture of the bottle and tried to locate it at local wine stores (unfortunately, unsuccessfully). After the meal, the chef, Nicola Stella, came out to our table, and spent some time with us talking about our meal, the simplicity of his ingredients, and his time cooking in other cities in Europe. The entire meal was a wonderful experience - very highly recommended.

My colleague and I were treated to dinner at Alle Fornaci on a recent trip to Matera. The restaurant and meal we received is one of the best experiences I have had on a work trip. The food was outstanding with plenty of flavours, good portions without being too big and coupled with great service and wonderful regional wines.I would highly recommend this restaurant.

We went there just for drinks initially, as they have a nice rooftop terrace. We got a bottle of prosecco that was nice. However they kind of 'forced' the antipasto on to us as they were asking if we wanted snacks with our drinks (you expect the usual bread/olives/crisps etc) so we said yes... But then they started bringing loads of plates! They didn't even ask our dietary requirements and I had to tell them I'm pescitarian so they had to return some plates, but that's how little they paid attention to what we wanted, they just wanted us to buy the food.Anyway, it tasted good overall, great mozzarella, good lasagna, but some lamb dish (that my partner ate) was a disaster apparently, and some other vegetables dishes were ok but nothing standing out.The bread was a bit dry. What we didn't like is that they were taking the plates out of the table so quickly, without even asking if we were done! They did take a plate that still had food on, and it was so quick that I couldn't say anything, how frustrating! After this we actually wanted dessert so we asked for the menu... Four times!! Each time the acknowledged it but never brought anything back (we also asked in Italian to make sure they understood!). So maybe 30 minutes later, we finally have a waiter telling us about the desserts. We went for a crème brûlée and some kind of pistachio cream inside a sugar case, and both were awful. Maybe that's why they didn't want to tell us about desserts. The crème brûlée was not a crème at all, more like a flan, it was not a nice texture. I did not finish the pistachio dessert, and that says a lot as I have a sweet tooth and always finish dessert! So go for a drink and enjoy the rooftop, but don't order food!

Basquait has a magical way of turning peasant food into art. Using only a few local ingredients, the kitchen transforms traditional Puglia recipes into creative dishes with an artistic presentation. Located a couple blocks outside the Sassi area, Basquait offers delicious, home-style comfort food that is memorable.
