Fonz's is a locally founded restaurant that has been a cornerstone of Manhattan Beach for the last 20 years. Started in 1997 by Olympic volleyball legend, Mike Dodd, and entrepreneur Dan Boehle, the restaurant was recently purchased by a group of local re
I recently came here with several colleagues from work for a night out after meetings. This is a very unpretentious place located right near the beach (parking is a little tough). They have a great menu for steak or seafood and an excellent wine menu. Our server was fantastic and we arrived on a Tuesday night which also meant 50% off select bottles of wine so we helped ourselves to an amazing Malbec. For apps we had calamari, spicy chicken bites and crab cakes and everyone was happy. For the main course I had the NY Strip special with an acorn pepper sauce and it was cooked perfectly rare as I requested. The restaurant was fairly dead but it was a Tuesday otherwise the ambiance was quite nice and it was easy to talk as a group. I would highly recommend and plan to come back!

We stopped in for a late lunch. We were seated quickly and the overall service of our waiter and the hostess could not have been better. A local friend had recommended this restaurant for its great seafood. We ordered fish tacos and halibut skewers. The wedge of sourdough bread that came with our meals ended up being the best part of our meals. Both of dishes were served well on their way to being cold. The skewers didn't appear to be grilled. It looked (and tasted) like they had been cooked with a torch. The fish tacos my wife ordered were quite cool...so much so that she didn't finish them. There are better places to get seafood in Manhattan Beach.

We are local residents. Have been frequenting this place since it opened a few years ago as a nice, clean, inexpensive food in a lively environment. Now it is overpriced with really unacceptable food and service. Last eveningâs dinner for me and my wife ended to be a $110 (including tip) disaster. $16 for a 4 Oz martini, a 6 Oz glass of cheap Chardonnay, 4 burned, greasy shrimps, a hamburger (worth no more than a $3 In-N-Out burger) and $20 for 6 pieces of tiny-leather-like scallops on a skewer. Our girl sever should have taken better care of personal hygiene and reeked of strong body odor. This place would still be nice for a bunch of guys wishing to binge out on beer after a day on the sand, but not for us any longer.

Down at the beach, overlooking the Pacific Ocean,The Strand House rises elegantly and iconically above the breakers. Like in an oceanfront home, friends become family and strangers become friends.
My husband made a reservation for my birthday at The Strand House, where we had been only one time previously. He picked it because of reputation and âocean viewâ. When we arrived, the hostess mumbled something incomprehensible in her youthful, rapidly spoken CALIFORNIA accent. All we could make out was that there were some seats where we could wait. After about 15 minutes, my husband checked on status and we were told people were paying checks. The hostess finally came to seat us a full half hour after our reservation time. She led us to a tiny table in the middle of the bar upstairs. When I expressed that we didnât want to sit in the bar, she dismissively said that âthey told you when you called that you might be sitting in the bar.â When I said that wasnât acceptable, she offered to âcall upâ to see if another table was available and then informed us that the table in the bar was our only option. At that point, I jumped onto Open Table and secured a reservation elsewhere, at a restaurant that is consistently good. Honestly, leaving a couple waiting for half an hour (actually 40 minutes, as we arrived early), with no apology for the wait time and then showing them to an unromantic table in the bar right next to the stairway, and implying that the customer should have known better, is a level of Service that is unacceptable and cause for never returning. We are locals who live in walking distance. Our friends come to Manhattan Beach to visit and we go out locally. There are half a dozen other places we will go to before considering The Strand House again. Do yourself a favor and go to MB Post, Petros, Mangiamo, The Arthur J or any other Manhattan Beach restaurant before selecting this snooty establishment.

I am usually quite suspicious of restaurants with trendy names like this that cater to beach crowds and tourists. However, a friend said it was the best in the area and me and my friends were not disappointed. The fish was fresh, delicately seasoned so as to preserve the taste and the sides of veges were delicious. I highly recommend this place just up the street from the Manhattan Pier.

On our way to LAX after a pleasant visit to California, we stopped in Manhattan Beach and stumbled into a wonderful seafood restaurant (though we were a little concerned by its name, since fishing with dynamite back home is destroying coral reefs). But we were confident that the fish we were served would not be illegally harvested! We were delighted to enjoy the serendipity that brought us through the doors and to a nice table with an ocean view and a nice menu that offered a wide choice of fish dishes. We all order something different, from seabass to squid, and shared tastes among us so we could all enjoy the wonderful tastes. We'll be back on our next visit to California.
