When travelling with motorbikes, you meet different people and different places. At our 2-week trip to parts of Italy (Volterra, Florence, Siena, Montepolciano, lakes - Garda, Tramezzino, Verona, Padova, Trento, etc), this was the best place to dine and stay over night. The dinner was sublime, with great first course of gniochi and seafood salad and fantastic main course of tender meat with vegetables. Wine and other cold drinks accompanying the food was great too. What cought my heart the most was the very welcoming owner, who gave us the warmest welcome and when going home in the evening showed us the small town of Portoguardo at 11 p.m. The town itself has a great cosy climate and is not so posh as other places we've seen.We also rented a room upstairs of the restaurant, which had a private tarrace, a/c and was furnished very tastefully. Another nice surprise was the price - only â¬60 per night for a double room.

Our group of three couples had our first meal in Italy at this wonderful restaurant on the recommendation of our hotel. We were not disappointed. We each selected a different entree and they were all delicious. The zucchini blossom starter was superb. The wines compliment the food and were well priced. As it was late in the season, and cool, we were not able to enjoy the outside patio but the atmosphere inside the restaurant was warm and welcoming.

Absolutely fantastic. We arrived quite late but a table was found for us outside. Food ordered after the extremely friendly waitress recommended some dishes. Stunning food, excellent wine. I really can't say one bad thing, apart from I had to leave. Do not leave without having desert. Wow.

We had a wonderful meal here. The owner was very nice. We arrived a bit early for their dinner service so he welcomed us to his lovely rose garden and served us Venetian Spritz and pizza. In the dining room we asked the waiter to order for us and not disappointed. The meal was outstanding, service way above and already looking forward to going back! Must try!!

Cosy restaurant, with plenty of hustle and bustle when we visited on a Saturday evening. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The food was really, very good- although if I'm to be totally honest, my risotto was a little salty. I would recommend here and I would return.

La Dogana 1557 (Fondaco of the commerce or Dogana) rise in the ancient quarter of Portogruaro city, a step from the historical town center, with kind attention and hospitality, pleasant and elegant bedrooms, with air conditioned, TV and bathroom. The resta
A lovely welcome from the lady of the house, followed by some beautiful food and wine made this probably the best eating experience that we have had in Portogruaro. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated, all the staff were welcoming and helpful and we are definitely coming back.

Let's start with the clever idea that Al Cjasal has implemented: you can get most of the dishes as a full portion, half portion or a bite. Excellent. With an interesting selection of dishes which changes seasonally and uses predominantly local ingredients, you don't have to sacrifise anything due to that. You know how it goes: you look at a menu in a good restaurant and have several things you'd like to try but have to choose only one.Well, we first had all possible bites - I thing there were eight or nine of them, not counting the complimentary little risotto which they prepared for a group sitting close to us and obviously get some extra which we gladly accepted.Al Cjasal likes to play with their food. The result is whimsical but not to a point of l'art pour l'art. Let me just give you one example so that there are not too many spoilers: you get a bowl of mussels. On the bottom of the bowl, there are just empty ones. On the top, there those you should eat. One half of the shell is made from a crispy, squid ink colored dough, resembling the real stuff. It is filled with baccala (salted codfish), topped with chives and other things so that it resembles a mussle. You remove the top (real) half of the shell and eat the rest in one bite. Marvellous. In taste (which counts), not only as a piece of culinary art. After the bites, we had one main dish each and just had space for one dessert. With a bottle of good local wine, water and coffee, the bill came to 145 EUR for three, which is an excellent value for both quantity and quality of the food we have.A definitive must-return when the season and menu change.
