We were on the road for hours as we approached a small community with sweeping old trees covering the roadway with Anti-Bellum and Victorian era Mansions on each side of the street. You must have wondered, is this the twilight zone? Then you came to four corners with a Civil War Monument in the center of the intersection with its base surrounded by flowers. To the right and left were late 1800s - turn-of-the-century buildings that housed former hotels, a movie theatre, and other establishments. They have now been re-purposed to house shops, boutiques, restaurants and professional offices, but the charm of the facades have not been lost even though you may be lost in another era. One of these buildings on the main corner is home to a fantastic restaurant, The Cajun Corner. It appears to be right out of New Orleans in style and menu where you can order your food grilled, blackened or fried. The menu had a full complement of pastas starting with Capillini and then adding meats, veggies and sauces. Their Po-Boys covered everything from a traditional club sandwich to those filled with scallops, oysters, andouille sausage, chicken tenders, shrimp grouper, crawfish and catfish. If you couldn't find anything there, they offered following simmering soups: red beans and rice, seafood gumbos and crawfish etouffee. Still not suited for your palette, Cajun Corner offered fresh garden salads of mixed greens with cucumbers, tomatoes, mushrooms, mandarin oranges, craisins, and topped with mozzarella cheese and homemade crustinis. toppings included any type of meat or fish grilled, blackened or fried. Also, there were appetizers to whet your palette including fried pickles, fried green tomatoes, eggplant, cheese & sweet potato sticks, stuffed mushrooms and potato skins, Cajun popcorn and just about anything else you could imagine. We hadn't gotten to the dinner menu yet. We were blown away by the variety and breadth of the menu.We finally settled on two garden district salads; mine covered with grilled chunks of chicken and blue cheese dressing. The chunks of blue cheese in the dressing were the size of good sized croutons. My wife had the same salad but hers was topped with grilled oysters and a delightful raspberry vinegrette. Everything was delicious. Both the chicken and oysters were tender and sweet. This restaurant had featured desserts that will knock your socks off including home-made praline bread pudding covered with caramel sauce, a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream and a mound of whipped cream. We didn't look any further. However, i can tell you after eating this sumptuous repast that any of their desserts are over the top delicious. They include: Caramel fudge pecan cake, cheesecake sundae, chocolate and peanut butter pie, Chocolate mousse caramel pie, key lime pie, brownie ala mode, creme brulee cheesecake or a root beer float. After the salads and dessert (one with two spoons - it was large enough to feed four or more) we should have settled down for a nap in a hammock swinging from the giant 150 year old trees in the neighborhood. But, we were headed for the shore and had a couple more hours of driving. We promised ourselves to "hit" this restaurant on our return trip; it was that good. Four thumbs up from my wife and me.
